Before I start this month’s social media posts, I do hope all those who celebrated the past holiday of Easter, and this month’s holiday, Passover, are able to experience its true meaning. Both these holidays celebrate freedom from bondage, each in its unique way. Another way of experiencing freedom of bondage is through Unity. Through Unity, comes sanity, and then compassion. This Valentines Day, smothered by a world filled with violent and hateful acts, we are re-committing ourselves to love. When we read bell hooks, we are reminded that love is about community care and accompaniment, love as unconditionally given in mutual aid spaces, love for those we are in solidarity with. This Valentines Day, we see love not as escapism, but as a fundamental action in changing the world and creating more equitable futures for our siblings and comrades. We follow bell hooks in seeing love as the practice of freedom, love as an act of a transformative labour that offers an important pathway for communities surviving and challenging the imperialist-white-supremacist-capitalist-heteropatriarchy systems of oppression, love as a verb. We will follow love to justice.

This holiday commemorates the day General Gordon Granger announced the freedom of all enslaved people in the United States on June 19th, 1865. Did you know President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which freed enslaved African Americans, was signed in 1862? According to the post below, many parts of the country did not receive the news immediately. Therefore, it took three years for the news to reach the state of Texas. Thanks to the dedication of individuals like Opal Lee, also known as the grandmother of Juneteenth, who started a walking campaign in 2016 to raise national awareness of this holiday. She walked from Fort Worth to Washington, DC, to promote Juneteenth. What an inspiring initiative! On this Father’s Day, let’s take a moment to appreciate the ones that used their influence for positive impact…. Just because you father a child doesn’t mean you are a good father… And just because you haven’t fathered a child doesn’t mean you aren’t a good fatherly mentor… I am one of three girls and now I have three children of my own. Today, I celebrate my dad and my husband whose roles of “father” aren’t just about the title, but what they bring to the table. I watch my boys look up to my husband and watch how he interacts with the world. They are learning from his actions—both big and small. He has influence and impact on these young minds. ❤️He chooses to show up when it’s hard. ❤️He chooses to love them for exactly who they are. ❤️He chooses to say sorry when he knows he’s wrong. ❤️He chooses to teach them even when he is busy. ❤️He chooses to find ways to connect. Today, I celebrate fathers who are helping to raise our next generation that will be kind, empathetic, authentic and confident.
