After 3 long months, our SEEDTank pitching event is finally back! Held last Thursday to an amazingly engaging crowd of 80ish, we had 3 startups that pitched for their seed stage investment to SEED Ventures and other investors. So thankful to have Eric Lam from Recast Ventures to grace our SharkTank event as our Guest Shark! More importantly, the panel provided so much invaluable insights to controversial topics concerning startup valuation that hinder fund-raising in today’s climate. Wise words as quoted by Eric, ‘Your passion, belief and determination & don't set your enterprise apart from others. These are the base qualities required of anyone that starts a business. Instead, give actual data (not how you feel) that compares your offering against others, whether by design, user experience, customer adoption rates or business model’. Cool conversation with Cristobal Alonso & Szymon Janiak on early stage venture capital at a Ukrainian startup event in Warsaw today! My key points: 1. The best entrepreneurs don't ask for permission. 2. They go after the biggest market available. 3. They start local, but local in San Francisco, not local in Radom. Those are the founders we want to back as SMOK Ventures.

When I talked to Julia Gudish Krieger recently, she said one of the recent trends in VC that had jumped out to her the most was the rise in seed extensions—and, in particular, seed extensions raised by companies with impressive metrics and lofty valuations. “There’s a little bit of a shift there,” Julia told me. “Companies that had significant growth in the last 12 months but had raised at those heightened valuations (in 2021 and early 2022) are not doing down rounds. They’re doing seed extensions.” Here's some more data to support that trend, from my colleague Peter Walker and his look at Carta's initial startup fundraising data from Q1: For now, the median valuation for seed-stage companies raising a bridge round in Q1 was $20.7 million, the highest it's been so far this decade. Like Julia said: Even for seed startups with "heightened valuations," raising an extension instead a new priced round is an increasingly popular option.
