Are you good at predicting the future?   My PhD supervisors Per Dannemand Andersen and Antti Silvast recently published an interesting paper regarding stakeholder inclusion in developing front-end inputs for energy models and scenarios.   During my PhD I aim to build on the knowledge of this article and investigate some of the issues raised.   I encourage all of you to read it. A new paper in Futures with Antti Silvast: https://lnkd.in/eVMrcFe6 We confront the broad question of the nature and quality of the contributions of experts, stakeholders, and the wider public to the development of detailed techno-economical inputs used in long-term energy scenario and modelling used for discussions and decisions on the green energy transition and science, technology and innovation (STI) policies in general. Our paper highlights a pragmatic approach to stakeholder inclusion, particularly in cases with limited resources, few actors, and challenges in applying advanced methods. Furthermore, the concept of technocracy is discussed as a framework for understanding the stakeholders’ role and limitations in decision-making for energy transitions and STI policies.

⚡ 🔌 Our paper on the dynamic environmental impacts of European electricity generation has been published in Energy Conversion and Management! 🔌 ⚡ We have developed hourly profiles of the environmental impacts of electricity generation for the five largest electricity consumers in the EU - Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland - and made them available. Our main findings are: ▫ The results vary significantly in most impact categories depending on the prevailing electricity generation pattern. ▫ LCA studies should not only be based on the environmental impacts of domestic electricity generation but should also consider cross-border electricity flows. ▫ It is recommended that dynamic electricity mix models be implemented in LCA studies that examine product systems with time-varying electricity consumption, like electric heating systems or electric car charging. ▫ The dynamic LCA electricity models can also be used to determine the potential for environmentally optimized operations. This paper results from a collaboration between the Technical University of Munich (Professorship of Regenerative Energy Systems) and the Politecnico di Milano (Renewable Heating and Cooling Lab). I am thrilled to announce that my first paper has been published in the Annual Reviews of Environment and Resources! The paper is a literature review discussing the energy potential of renewables. It shows that scientists around the world agree that the technical and economic potential of renewables vastly exceeds the electricity demand in 2050. Though the estimations come with some limitations mentioned in the paper, the findings are insightful and such good news should be shared! Is it possible to use the ocean’s energy to supplement our energy supply? Yes, according to EPRI’s Technology Innovation team, which examines the potential in a new report. Marine renewable energy (MRE) systems extract energy from four potential sources: waves, currents, tides, and ocean thermal differentials. The worldwide potential for MRE development is actually very significant. While the sector is still emerging, it benefits from its untapped potential and relative proximity to population centers. While subsea electricity transmission faces its own challenges, harnessing MRE capabilities presents an opportunity to diversify energy, especially for coastal communities.
