Today, on June 20th, the longest day of the year, we come together to shed light on a cause close to my heart — the fight against Alzheimer's disease. This day holds special significance as it marks the peak of the Alzheimer's Association®’s campaign to raise awareness and funds for this relentless disease. My journey with Alzheimer’s began over 20 years ago when my maternal grandmother was diagnosed. Many years later, I lost my father to Dementia. Witnessing their battles taught me that Alzheimer’s and Dementia affect much more than just memory; they impact the very essence of who we are. These personal experiences ignited a passion in me to find new ways to support those living with these diseases. This passion has shaped my career in brain health at Sage Therapeutics and has become a family affair, with my wife and kids joining me in Alzheimer’s Association’s marathons and triathlons over the years. Together, we envision a future where fewer people lose their sense of self to this disease. On this day filled with the most light, I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone dedicated to creating a brighter future for patients and families affected by Alzheimer's and dementia. This Father’s Day, I want to take a moment to honor and thank Steven D’Achille for his bravery in sharing his family’s story. Steven’s resilience and dedication to honoring Alexis's memory through the impactful work of the Alexis Joy Foundation is inspiring- not to mention, a beacon of hope and support for countless families facing similar challenges. Fathers play a critical role in maternal health and well-being. Steven's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of being there for our partners, recognizing the signs of postpartum depression, and advocating for the support they need. Thank you, Steven, and the entire Alexis Joy Foundation team, for your unwavering commitment to this cause. Your work is making a profound difference in the lives of many. Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible fathers out there. 

Always great catching up with Jim Frates on all things leadership and biotech! At The Association of Bioscience Financial Officers International Conference this week, we talked about success in biotech, rooted in doing what’s right by patients and building strong cultures. In today's dynamic environment, our values will set us apart as leaders. We must live these values and inspire the next generation to carry them forward. We must also encourage leaders to lean in with an enterprise-wide mindset and prioritize collaboration. It's an exciting time for science, with unprecedented momentum driving significant advancements that will impact generations to come, despite macroeconomic challenges. For so many of us, we persevere because we know we can make a profound impact. This resilience is critical to breakthroughs, particularly in complex areas such as brain health. Thank you to ABFO for having us, and thanks Jim for your continued leadership (and for coordinating outfits)! 

As we continue to navigate the complexities of brain health, the need for innovative solutions has never been more critical. There is a clear call-to-action for collaboration, moving novel science forward, and harnessing our collective expertise and passion with the goal of advancing patient care for generations to come. That call to action to meet the global needs in brain health has been the focus this week at Biomed Israel 2024, where I’ve been tremendously inspired by the ingenuity, innovation, and resilience in this country and from the biotech community. The energy and commitment to advancing scientific progress were palpable, and it was an honor to witness firsthand the incredible advancements in science and technology from local start-ups. These companies are paving the way for new breakthroughs in the treatment of devastating brain health disorders – innovations that will help countless patients and their families. It was an honor to attend the Alzheimer’s Association’s Hope on the Harbor gala last week. Throughout my career and personal life, I've witnessed firsthand the heart-wrenching toll Alzheimer's takes on individuals and families. We've all experienced the anguish of losing loved ones, grappled with the challenges of caregiving, and fought tirelessly for improved access to quality care. These moments have fueled the commitment Natalie and I have had to personally support this cause over the years, from triathlons to fundraisers and more.   I’m continually inspired by the remarkable power of scientific progress and the tireless efforts of organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association. But our work isn’t done. As the prevalence of Alzheimer's continues to rise, effective treatments are urgently needed. Let's continue pushing toward a future where Alzheimer's is just a memory. #EndAlz #HopeOnTheHarbor

I’m grateful to organizations like NAMI for shedding light on invaluable mental health resources during Jewish American Heritage Month.   Understanding and addressing the unique mental health needs within our community requires a concerted effort from all fronts. Now more than ever, the mental well-being of Jewish Americans is imperative, and together we can equip ourselves with expanded knowledge and resources to support our resilient community. Thank you, NAMI, for sharing these fantastic organizations who are making a difference in the lives of many. 

I’m proud to work with courageous women like Kim, whose story of navigating through symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD) is a powerful reminder of the unseen struggles many new moms face. On Mother’s Day and beyond, let's ensure our message to mothers during the postpartum period is clear: PPD is not a personal failing, it’s a serious medical condition and help is available. Thank you, Kim, for sharing your story and allowing your experience to drive our mission forward. And thank you to all the incredible mothers at Sage, who pour their personal passion and dedication into helping build a brighter future in maternal mental health.

Natalie and I had an unforgettable evening at the American Heart Association Massachusetts' Heart and Stroke Ball, where we had the chance to witness the spirit of collective dedication to cardiovascular health.     For a century, the American Heart Association, together with their invaluable volunteers, supporters, and collaborative partners, has been the driving force behind building longer, healthier lives. It's a privilege to stand alongside them in this noble mission.    I'm continuously inspired by the AHA's remarkable strides towards enhancing overall wellness and saving lives. Their unwavering commitment sets a powerful example for us all. Here's to the AHA and every organization in our communities that tirelessly works towards positive change- together, let's continue to be the catalysts for a healthier, brighter future.
