In a world where a lot of attention is given to the negative impacts on the economy-interest rates, inflation, etc-I wanted to highlight the women making an undeniable positive impact. 💅 Greta Gerwig's Barbie became the highest grossest movie ever for Warner Brothers, with its 6th consecutive week earning more than 15 million. Not to mention all of the Barbie merch that is selling out before it even gets on the shelf. If you haven't seen it, I promise its worth the hype. 🎤 Taylor Swift's Eras Tour is on track to become the highest grossing tour in concert history at more than $1 billion dollars. The cities she visited saw their highest hotel occupancies since before the pandemic. 🐝 Similarly, Beyonce's impact on the cities she visited caused significant increases to local businesses. In Philadelphia, Black and women-owned salons saw a spike of 14%, while LGBTQ-owned clothing stores saw an increase of 194%. Seeing these strong, creative women not only succeed but dominate is a powerful reminder of the impact of female leadership! 💪

Barbie crossed 1B USD box office collections globally, i.e. 459M in North America and 572M internationally. In my view it is a turning point for media and entertainment industry: 1. Theatrical business is back in business. 2. It will be a strong signal that theatrical releases can give you upfront returns on your content acquisition. 3. Streaming platforms especially those who make "originals" need to rethink their strategy - they should look at leveraging the theatrical releases too 4. Audience is thriving back to theater's and will support if the content is great 5. Who knew that #barbiemovie + #oppenheimermovie would be the #boxoffice hits they've become? If you've been paying attention to the #Summer movie news, this combination of movies is a phenomenon under the somewhat dubious handle 'Barbenheimer' that began circulating on social media before the simultaneous theatrical release of two #blockbuster films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, on July 21, 2023, in the U.S. and around the world. Counter-programming never went quite like this, and the combination of the Barbie movie with Oppenheimer is a HIT!    Reaching $1 billion at the box office, Barbie ended up with $162 million in its first weekend of release, and Oppenheimer also beat expectations, with $500 million and climbing. These are the record setting box office records of the year. Did you see both films? One?   These results seem to indicate that people will go to the theaters if something is going on (buzz, hype, mega-marketing). It helps that both films received some decent to good reviews. Hopefully, this is a positive sign of things to come - and more people attending movies. Both come with substantial production budgets ($100,000,000) and large marketing budgets, no surprise. These positive results aren't likely to impact the resolution of the entertainment #strikes - but hopefully the momentum won't be completely lost.

Let's analyze how a blockbuster is promoted. Let's taalk about the Divergent film. Divergent film is from Lionsgate studio and was released in 2014. It is based on a best-seller book by Veronica Roth, and its production cost was around 85 million US dollars. This was the last big blockbuster I promoted before moving to Spain, and what a way to say goodbye to Mexico. Shailene Woodley and Theo James came to promote the film in Mexico, and we had 3000 people in attendance at the premiere. But before talent is approved to travel to another country, many things must happen, and you constantly communicate with the studio. And you know the first thing the studio asks when starting a promotion? Yes, you are right, the strategies for the film in the territory. This is called P&A, and it has so much information. There is information the studio takes into account if you want to fly the talent to your territory. You might say, Rosa, my films are small; I make indie films. Yes, but I am sure your dream is to produce an 85 million film one day; if not, I'm not your person because we dream big here. You need to train to produce these big-budget films; you need strategies, structure, processes, and marketing, and what better way to start than right now?
