Bravo!
Between donor, grantee, and organizational management, leading Silicon Valley Community Foundation – the nation’s largest community foundation – is no small feat. EMC is proud to have worked with Andy Serwer at Barron's on this cover story featuring CEO Nicole Taylor and exploring how the organization works to make life better in the Bay Area. In 2023, Silicon Valley Community Foundation donated over $3 billion to local nonprofits, supporting work in housing, early childhood development, financial stability, and more. Despite its ties to industry, innovation, and wealth, the Bay Area is also home to extreme income inequality and a housing crisis, among other struggles. By working closely with donors and grantees, SVCF acts as a connector, working to ensure that donations have the greatest possible impact in the community. “My job is about changing hearts and minds and not just about philanthropy,” Taylor told Barron’s. “I have a lot of work ahead.” We’re honored to work alongside Nicole and her incredible team to chronicle their impact. #Nonprofit #SiliconValley #ClientWins Read the piece here: https://lnkd.in/g48w22bJ

I appreciate these recommendations for responding to belittling comments, as they are constructive and can be very effective in many situations. Please also remember it's important to consider context—who the person is belittling you and what the relationship is. When mentoring folks, I often say, "I'd rather you be safe than right." Also, it's so true that cultural backgrounds and personal experiences shape how we take these things and how our responses are received. Instead of asking 'How am I supposed to respond?', maybe saying 'I'm trying to figure out the best way to respond. Can we chat about why you said that? It could be more effective. This approach lets us stay true to ourselves while considering everyone's perspectives.
