✳️𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌'𝒔 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 #19 – Describing Reality✳️
We lose sight of reality all the time. 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒏, 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒔𝒆𝒆, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚. Easier said than done. I learned this lesson 30+ years ago from Vistage Worldwide, Inc. and I've been practicing ever since.
For those of you who prefer reading over watching the video, here is the text:
Last week I spoke with a friend of mine, a C-level executive who had recently lost a top-notch direct report, leaving a huge workload gap.
My friend, of course, was looking for a replacement and working feverishly to get the extra work done.
✅He was stressed and working unsustainable hours.
✅His staff was modeling his behavior, stressed and working unsustainable hours.
As we talked through the situation, it was apparent that my friend’s dedication to the company and his work ethic had ✅clouded his ability to see the reality of the situation.
✅I was taught a long time ago that when we get stressed, it’s a signal to relook at the situation, to assess the situation with an outside perspective as if you’re watching a video of it.
✅Take the emotion away just long enough to see the reality and even more important, find the words to describe the reality.
In my friend’s case, at a well-run organization, it’s impossible to lose a key employee and expect the workload to get picked up by those who remain. Everyone can work a bit harder, but you can’t just magically get everything done.
✅As a leader it is your job to see and, most importantly, to describe the reality to your team.
Yes, please step up, work a bit harder and yes, we expect some things won’t get done. We’ll triage and we’ll get through this together. That’s my friend’s reality.
✅For you, be the leader that everyone wants.
✅Learn to describe the reality of your situation.
