Natural doesn't necessarily mean sustainable… yet there is a consumer-demand-driven urgency to transition from petrochemical-based to natural ingredients.   This transitionary journey has accelerated the interest and uptake of upcycled ingredients. During these last post-COVID years, upcycled ingredients came out of the shadows and became a MUST-HAVE by every personal care brand and manufacturer.   Having pioneered the coffee upcycling movement since 2016, and our focus on personal care, during 2021 at Kaffe Bueno we were more than ready for the emerging and continuously growing demand for upcycled ingredients.   Internally, we are always challenging ourselves - how we do things, what we do, and everything in between.   Hence, our initial excitement for increased demand, soon became a series of questions like, "we are upcycling… but, are we really producing sustainably?", and "how many KGs of CO2-eq is 1 KG of each of our ingredients producing, and how do they compare vs. industry benchmarks?".   In the race to transition to natural, there has been little to none accountability of emissions by ingredient suppliers. Now that every company claims to be upcycling (even if they don't), it became clear to us that being among the first to do so is not a differentiator strong enough… Emissions accountability is slowly becoming the holy grail to filter out the truly sustainable companies.   Last year, we collaborated with CIRCE - Centro Tecnológico to carry out an LCA, which helped us quantify not only the emissions of our ingredients based on our supply chain, but also industry benchmarks.   Next week, at the Sustainability Zone at in-cosmetics Global in Paris, I will give a keynote where I will share the results, while showing the industry how upcycling coffee into non-caffeinated active and functional ingredients can help them reduce their Scope 3 emissions without compromising on performance, quality nor costs.   If you want to join: Where: Sustainability Zone, in-cosmetics Global 2024 When?: Thursday 18th April, 10:15 am   You can also visit us at our stand 1A67 and meet Marina Cardia Jardim, Silvia Kollerová, Noomi Mikkelsen, Juan Pablo Medina and myself.   Looking forward to seeing everyone!
