New situation report from the @CrisisReady team on the flooding in #Brazil. (https://lnkd.in/gZqTarTn) ❗Record levels of flooding, driven by heavy rainfall and storms, continues to severely affect the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. As of May 13th, the death toll from these storms is 143 and over 327,000 people have been displaced from their homes. 👉 Significant population declines and returns have been detected across 54 of 105 districts within and nearby the areas of greatest flooding impact, based on data from Meta. Key mobility trends across the region are detailed in the "Movement" section of this report. Data from the Facebook platform on population is based on a high sample size (-17%) of the total population in Rio Grande do Sul. Baseline district level Facebook population is highly correlated with Brazil's census population, with a R2 value of 0.98. 🛰️ Remote sensing from EU Copernicus shows areas of riverine flooding across Rio Grande do Sul. Image data has been merged into a single time-frame for the purpose of understanding overall flooding impacts across the entire duration of these events. One in 50 people living in two dozen coastal cities in the United States could experience significant flooding by 2050, finds team including UEA's Prof Robert Nicholls. The study combines satellite-obtained measurements of sinking land, also known as subsidence, with sea-level rise projections and tide charts to provide a new comprehensive look at the potential for flooding in a combined 32 cities along the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts. Led by Virginia Tech, it projects that in the next three decades as many as 500,000 people could be affected as well as a potential 1 in 35 privately owned properties damaged by flooding. It also highlights the racial and socioeconomic demographics of those potentially affected. Flooding is expected to increase in the future as the effects of climate change increase. In this report, the Congressional Budget Office examines how projected flood risk varies across communities with different economic and demographic characteristics in two multiyear projection periods, one centered on 2020 and the other centered on 2050. https://lkdin.io/4C3P

We often talk about disasters in isolation, focused on their unique circumstances and needs. But how have disasters collectively affected American households and families, and how does that inform our preparation for a warmer future? The US Census Bureau’s recent Household Pulse Survey offers a rare, comprehensive look at the breadth and scale of disasters’ effects in the US. Andrew Rumbach and I took a look at the data over 12 rounds of data collection totaling 826,941 respondents—an unprecedented view of disasters’ nationwide effects. https://lnkd.in/gXF3dyT7

‼️ Yesterday, FEMA announced the designation of 483 census tracts as Community Disaster Resilience Zones. This initial designation allows communities at higher risk from the effects of #naturalhazards and #climatechange to become eligible for increased federal support. The Community Disaster Resilience Zones Act of 2022 was designed to identify and designate high-risk census tracts to help them become more #resilient to natural hazards and the climate crisis. Designated zones will have prioritized access for resilience and mitigation funding 💰. The Community Disaster #Resilience Zones are identified using a modified version of the National Risk Index. This first designation covers all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with more designations expected to be announced in the coming months to cover tribal lands and territories. 💻 Read the #FEMA press release ➡ https://lnkd.in/g8RV8P7G 🗺 Check out the Community Disaster Resilience Zones map and list of designations ➡ https://lnkd.in/gPhpU-Xq #FEMAupdate #disasteresilience #hazardmitigation #disastermitigation #federalfunding #CDRZ #riskmitigation

A recent analysis by Moody Analytics delves into the dynamics of population growth within flood-prone areas over the past few decades. The study reveals that upper-middle-income countries exhibit the highest concentration of new settlements exposed to floods. Surprisingly, even countries such as the United States feature regions experiencing a substantial influx of new development in flood zones. Notably, several high-income countries, including the U.S., already harbor a significant proportion of their developments in flood-prone areas, despite a comparatively lower growth rate in flood zone settlement over the last 30 years. Imagine a community by the river, safe and sound, thanks to advanced technology. At Responscity System, we harness the power of AI and ML to measure high and low tides and monitor real-time rainfall data. When heavy rainfall coincides with high tide, the risk of flooding skyrockets. In 2023 alone, floods affected thousands of homes and displaced countless families. By predicting these flood risks, our system alerts high-risk areas well in advance, giving residents the critical time they need to relocate to safety. Stay ahead of the storm with Responscity System's comprehensive flood monitoring and early warning solutions. Let's work together to protect lives and build resilient communities. #FloodSafety #EarlyWarning #AI #ML #CommunityAlert #RealTimeMonitoring #StaySafe #DisasterPreparedness #ResponscitySystem #SaveLives #FloodPrevention #EmergencyResponse

Great to see partnerships in action from #Google Flood Hub together with humanitarian organisations to provide cash advances for citizens to prepare of #AI predicted floods. Certainly much more needed to reduce the inherent risks and enhance resilience this is still a great example in the right direction #AI4good #climatechange #disasterpreparedness https://lnkd.in/e2Pw2_hw
