🌟 Three exits in one week! 🌱📈 We’re thrilled to highlight three successful exits that we announced last month. 👏 It’s been a pleasure supporting each of these companies as part of our portfolio: 🌎 Keela, our first investment out of Fund I, was acquired by Aplos . Since our initial investment in 2018, Keela grew to serve thousands of non-profits around the world scale their missions effectively. 🌎 Sustain.Life (now part of Workiva), our second exit from Fund II, was acquired by Workiva for $100M USD. Sustain.Life helped companies transition to a carbon free future, growing recurring revenue by 10X and reaching hundreds of customers since April 2022. 🌎 The third exit is confidential. Although we can’t disclose details of the transaction, we are excited that this company found a strategic partner to allow them to scale up after a long, shrewd battle with market dynamics. In a time when many seek liquidity, we’re proud to celebrate our founders’ achievements and impacts. And we think our biggest potential winners are still in the portfolio. 💪🚀

🚗🔋 Electric vehicles are crucial to the decarbonization of transportation. But most EV batteries are retired with 70-80% of their life left. What happens next? With 20+ years of experience, Dr. Surinder Singh founded Relyion Energy Inc to create a second life for lithium-ion batteries and exponentially extend their lifespans. 📈 Relyion Energy Inc built physics-based machine learning and AI that allows for the utilization of each battery component individually. The renewed batteries are bundled into a stable, affordable, on-demand energy storage solution. Dr. Surinder Singh and his team at Relyion Energy Inc published the impact of their work in a peer-reviewed journal with Stanford, showing: 🔋Battery life is extended by 20+ years 💰30-50% cheaper than new batteries 🌍60% less carbon per MWh 🔌Their solution can be used as backup power (replacing diesel generators!) or to increase storage capacity, avoid demand peaks, and reduce the strain on the grid. “The exploding popularity of AI poses a real threat to our energy systems because of how quickly AI’s thirst for energy could spike demand.” 💡 Check out Sophie Seston's piece on how AI is impacting energy systems now, forecasts for the future, and the solutions we need to address this. – #ActiveImpact #AI #Energy #Climate #ClimateTech #ClimateTechCanada
I did a deep dive on what the roll-out of AI will mean for our energy infrastructure. Spoiler alert: it’s a huge challenge. We emit 50B tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gasses every year - a byproduct of the immense industrial progress and humanity’s increased prosperity over the last 50+ years. But incredibly exciting developments in technology often have a dark climate underbelly. If you are working on solutions to this issue or have thoughts you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you!

We’re thrilled to announce the acquisition of Sustain.Life (now part of Workiva) by Workiva! Annalee Bloomfield and the team at Sustain.Life (now part of Workiva) sought out to build a net zero planning platform that brings real, practical value to customers at a pivotal time in our fight to address climate change. Over the last few years, they’ve helped hundreds of customers navigate an increasingly complex landscape to lower their emissions. This acquisition is another example that climate tech is creating strong distributions to LPs, even in complex macroeconomic environments and that investing in strong, female-led teams creates exceptional outcomes. We’re excited to see what the future holds and we’re rooting for continued impact from the Workiva Carbon team in the years to come. 💥 https://lnkd.in/gut7Ttdf

🤝 We’re happy to share that our portfolio company Keela has been acquired by Aplos . Keela was the first investment of our first fund, which started with an SDG alignment thesis before moving exclusively to climate tech. Since our initial investment in 2018, Keela grew to serve thousands of customers and helped non-profits all over the world acquire the resources they needed to scale their social and environmental missions more efficiently. We're very grateful for the countless hours of hard work put in by the management team and staff at Keela to bring it to early scale. We wish the Aplos team well and hope for amplified impact in the years to come. Congratulations Nejeed Kassam and team! 🎉
It is with immense gratitude that I share that Keela has joined the Aplos family of companies. Over the past 8 years, it has been the honor of a lifetime build an incredible product, an inspiring team, and a wonderful community. Thank you to our amazing staff, customers, investors, and supporters. We could not have been where we are today without all of you. The nonprofit sector is a rewarding, exhausting, and inspiring sector to work in. Building best-in-class tech for the sector gave me energy to wake up every morning and innovate, grind, and grow. Nonprofits and the communities that they support are the lifeblood of our democracies and the people in them. I truly hope that we have done just a little bit to make nonprofits and civil society better. Again, thanks to so many people for their support, passion, and dedication to Keela. Congrats to Anush Vinod and the entire Aplos and Keela teams! https://lnkd.in/gaXX3Fyd

⚡ To transition to a net-zero future, we need to electrify everything. 📈 However – the energy grid is facing increasing strain from electricity demand, and distributed energy resources make balancing supply and demand in the control room more complex. Enter: ThinkLabs AI, Inc. ThinkLabs’ AI copilot continuously monitors and analyzes the energy grid in order to automatically detect violations and recommend solutions before problems happen, increasing reliability and capacity as we transition away from dirty fuels and increase grid demand. They’ve trained their copilot on the most sophisticated and robust dataset on the market, and through their partnership with GE Vernova, they are well positioned to scale their solution to address utility pain points quickly. Founder Josh Wong has built a strong reputation for execution with utility customers through his prior company OpusOne, which was acquired by GE in 2022. 🚀 We are thrilled to have co-led their seed round with Powerhouse. https://lnkd.in/gqQjCdEw #ActiveImpact #Sustainability #CleanTech #GridTech #Energy
