Foundation board and development council members are essential allies in advancing philanthropy. Have you checked out Accordant's insights on the recent Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for Year 2023? The data from this year’s report created mixed reactions. On one hand, we learned that all sources of giving in 2023 declined or remained flat when adjusted for inflation, despite $557.16 billion raised in total. On the other hand, five of the nine sub-sectors, including health ($56.58 billion), reached an all-time high even when adjusted for inflation. In a nutshell, this is what we learned: Giving dropped again—by individuals, by foundations and by corporations. Giving dropped across the board. The news is discouraging, so how do we move forward from here? Read more: https://ow.ly/SVpr50SqGXH #healthcare #philanthropy

Which came first—the campaign or the case? Campaigns play a crucial role in elevating giving and program performance for organizations. Philanthropy without campaigning is akin to training for a marathon but never running the race. However, the traditional approach of waiting for a fully articulated strategic plan before constructing a case can lead to missed opportunities. Instead, adopting an organic approach, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s philosophy of unity between form and function can lead to more effective campaigning. Check out this recent article from Accordant's Heather Wiley Starankovic, CFRE, CAP, and John Donovan to learn more: https://ow.ly/eZou50Svki2 #healthcare #philanthropy #campaign #caseforsupport

Rarely do I post about client visits, but I would be remiss not to acknowledge what an incredible week that was had at University Health in San Antonio, TX this week. Accordant began a longstanding partnership with Sara Alger, CFRE and the University Health Foundation 3 years ago with many services including grateful engagement. This week we officially launched their comprehensive grateful engagement strategy by providing gratitude training to nearly 150 nursing leaders and 25 hand-picked physician and clinician providers who will be working in partnership with the University Health Foundation to elevate gratitude and grow philanthropy from grateful patients and families. A few incredible things happened: 1. We learned that our physician, clinician and nursing leaders are hungry to help patients express their gratitude to the foundation. Feedback during and after sessions included: “Stroke patients and families on 8Sky are always expressing gratitude. We could do a better job of speaking with them and sharing contact information for the foundation.” “Excellent work that the UH has been doing for many years and I’m glad philanthropy is something we can promote. Other private hospitals so it… why not us?!” “This is stimulating conversation. I’m glad the foundation is reaching out to us for input and conversation.” 2. Physicians, nurses and staff WANT to learn about the foundation and how they can help grateful patients and families express their gratitude through philanthropy. During our 2nd nursing session, we were expecting 40 nurse managers to attend and 120 showed up! Providing CNE credits for the course helped, but to share this session in a room full of 120 nurses was a powerful testament to our clinician and nurse colleague’s willingness to learn about gratitude and philanthropy to support their patients and families. Thank you so much to Sara Alger, CFRE and team for an incredible week. Now, the real work begins, but what an incredible kick-off to what we know is going to be a wildly successful effort. We are just getting started ♥️ Susan Attwell, CFRE

In the realm of philanthropy, particularly within major gifts programs, the stakes are high. The individuals organizations bring onto their teams carry the weighty responsibility of not just meeting fund development goals, but of fostering a culture of giving that can significantly impact their communities. The process of hiring these pivotal figures is fraught with challenges, including significant concerns about turnover and the high costs of onboarding new staff. These challenges underscore the importance of asking the right questions during interviews to ensure organizations select individuals who are not only highly capable but deeply committed to making a meaningful impact. Check out this week's eNews for a brand new piece by Accordant’s Heather Wiley Starankovic, CFRE, CAP, on interviewing major gifts officer candidates: https://ow.ly/ZzRx50SmYNU #healthcare #philanthropy #interviewing #majorgiftsofficers
