AARP Foundation, along with law firms Peter Romer-Friedman Law PLLC, and Outten & Golden LLP, filed a new class action lawsuit against a major government contractor that has allegedly intentionally discriminated against older jobseekers for years. #AgeDiscrimination continues to be pervasive in hiring across the country. Nearly one in six adults report that they were not hired for a job they applied for within the past two years because of their age, and half of jobseekers report that they were asked by an employer to provide their birth date during the application or interview process. My wife had the opposite happen to her. She went back into the workforce after a 20 year absence in the medical field. She was hired because the hospital was desperately seeking people who would show up to work and actually work. Since being hired, her experience with the younger generation of employees has been borderline hatred of her work ethic and many are hoping for her failure (which won’t happen😁). Mother of two, and grandmother of 3; church bus ministry for years, I think she can handle the drama 😂. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-06-12/struggling-at-work-young-employees-more-lonely-than-older-workers?utm_source=website&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=linkedin
Age discrimination is so pervasive. In previous positions I was explicitly instructed not to hire anyone over 40 and when I ignored that illegal mandate, was criticized. If litigation is the only way to address it, I hope that works. Education hasn't helped.
Can Raytheon document that "recent graduates" have contemporary knowledge ( I assume they do) that tenured experts in the field do not have? (I assume many tenured experts in the same field also have the knowledge especially if they've been active in the field)> I'd think that would be the basis for these decisions.
I'm constantly told that my application cannot proceed without college graduation dates, etc. We know exactly why they are asking. The value of our wisdom and experience seems not to register with these places.
Both my mother & husband believe they have had age-based discrimination, though it can be impossible to prove.
Keep up the good work, AARP!
Yippee!

2wFormer Defense Contractor, DoE and DoD. I was just talking with my wife this morning about this. It's been my experience that Human Resources Officers are not qualified to judge the work history or work experience of a candidate for hire. I worked for many well known Defense Contractors for 26 years. The serious nature of this type of work requires and demands adult maturity along with the knowledge skills and abilities (KSA's). It's no wonder why we are seeing peaces and part falling off of our aircraft these days.
