This position reports and works under the direction of the Planning and Zoning Manager and is responsible for the research, data collection, and revisions related to comprehensive planning and development activities for the city.
Reviews or assists in the review of moderately difficult development proposals and site plans for conformance with codes, plans, and regulations
Reviews or assists in the review of sign permits, building permits, business licenses, subdivision plats, and other documents, on behalf of the Planning Division
Evaluates or assists in the evaluation of rezoning’s, ordinance amendments, site plans, special use permits, variances and other proposals
Coordinates community review of public and private development projects
Provides information to the public regarding development regulations
Assists in resolving citizen and customer issues
Conducts field evaluations and assessments
Gathers, organizes and analyzes information and data necessary to identify trends, make forecasts, make projections and administer other activities related to comprehensive planning activities. Makes recommendations regarding preferred and/or suggested changes in the Comprehensive Plan
Analyzes socio-economic conditions and basic infrastructure needs within the City of Marietta and make recommendations as appropriate to the Planning and Zoning Manager
Uses ARC/VIEW and ARC/INFO software as needed to research and provide reports to the Planning and Zoning Manager
Researches the availability of various related State and Federal grants; prepares and submits grant applications. Coordinates the implementation of grant awards
Prepares and makes presentations to city and elected officials and the public as assigned
Works closely with city Zoning, Public Works and Economic Development personnel concerning comprehensive planning and development issues. Works with GIS division to ensure city/BLW Planning and Zoning data is updated into the GIS database
Attends and/or participates in substantial number of public meetings concerning planning issues as assigned
Coordinates activities and provides technical assistance for the Marietta Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Historic Board of Review and Historic Preservation Commission, as assigned
Coordinates with State of Georgia, Cobb County, Cobb DOT, and the Atlanta Regional Commission on integrating the city's transportation needs with the state, regional, and county planning efforts
Performs other related duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college with a degree in Urban Planning or a closely related field with major course work in long-range planning, forecasting and related computer applications and two years related experience; or a master’s degree in urban planning and major course work same as above
Proficient in MS Word, Excel and other MS Office programs as well as strong understanding of internet resources for researching planning related issues
Thorough knowledge of computer software applications for planning and related urban management issues; ability to use ARC/VIEW, ARC/INFO programs
Thorough working knowledge of current planning principles and techniques
Knowledge of urban dynamics and development impact on neighborhoods, traffic, city services, and environment
Ability to research, develop and implement various land use plans
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Ability to make public presentations
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Ability to multitask and respond to immediate requests from supervisor
