Summary

To maintain a database of information on persons diagnosed and/or treated for cancer within the CTRH system. Reports comprehensive cancer data to the State of Nevada Cancer Registry, regulatory and accreditation organizations to maintain regulatory compliance and accreditation. Retrieves and analyzes data regarding cancer incidence, treatment and outcomes to physicians and other healthcare professionals. Population served by this position is in all age categories.

Responsibilities

  • Review patient’s medical records, abstracts and codes demographic factors, diagnosis, history, extent of disease, and treatment.
  • Maintains accession register of new cases.
  • Contacts discharged patients, families, and physicians to obtain follow-up information, such as quality of life and length of the patient survival.
  • Analyzes data, prepares reports in statistical, narrative, and graphic form for use by physicians and researchers.
  • Prepares reports for the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) and government agencies as required.
  • Follows guidelines of Joint Commission or other accrediting body, National Cancer Registrar’s Association, and ACoS CoC (American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer).
  • Abstract information from the medical record and ensures that 90% of cases are abstracted within six months of date of first contact per ACoS guidelines.
  • Review and/or query the physician for added documentation.
  • Assigns appropriate codes and maintains coding accuracy.
  • Develops and maintains departmental procedure manual.
  • Is responsible for organizing and presenting weekly tumor conferences to medical staff and other healthcare professionals – follows department policies/procedures for conducting tumor conferences.
  • Organizes, enters and maintains patient computer data to ensure conformance to tumor registry operational standards and to meet the needs of the users of registry data.
  • Is a member of Cancer Committee and functions as a resource to the members of the committee as necessary with projects and input.
  • Coordinates physician QA review of Cancer Registry abstracting.
  • Serves as a coach and educational resource to other staff as needed.
  • Performs data quality control activities, collates, analyzes and summarizes findings; identifies opportunities for improvement and reports these findings to cancer committee on a regular basis.
  • Preserves the confidentiality and security of patient data stored in Tumor Registry files.
  • Maintains professional growth through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of trends in the oncology field.
  • Attends meetings and committees as requested. Performs other related duties as requested.
  • Works with medical director of cancer program to assure physician compliance in AJCC-TNM staging.
  • Provides proper orientation and training within the department.
  • Fosters teamwork and demonstrates the ability for tact, courtesy and dependability.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate of Science degree in a related field preferred.
  • Certification as Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) by the National Cancer Registrars Association.
  • Two years experience as CTR in a hospital cancer registry.
  • Familiarity and experience with most recent coding revisions: ICD-0-3, ICD-9-CM, Collaborative Stage Coding, AJCC-TNM Stage Coding, FORDS coding.
