Congratulations to Beth Stewart, B.S.N., R.N., CEN, for being the recipient of the 25 Outstanding Texas Nurses Award from the Texas Nurses Association. The annual award recognizes the contributions of nurses who create a culture of care; support healing, health and wellness; innovate improvements; and contribute to their community. “Beth has an unwavering commitment to patient care and nursing excellence,” said Julie Balluck, D.N.P., R.N., NEA-BC, chief nursing officer, Texas Health HEB. “She is an outstanding leader and does a great job at recognizing staff members and fostering teamwork in a high-stress environment.” We're so proud of you, Beth! https://bit.ly/3VH9MZN #Get2KnowTexasHealth #TexasHealthNurses #Award #Recognition

Beloved Fort Worth activist Opal Lee wove her life’s stories with passionate beliefs to deliver a simple but powerful message last week at Texas Health Hurst-Euless-Bedford: Help others and love them. “If you know someone is struggling, help them,” Opal said during her half-hour conversation with Jared Shelton, FACHE, hospital president. “I ask you, if you don’t know somebody, find somebody because there are plenty of people who need help.” The two sat across from each other before a small crowd in the hospital atrium, an intentionally intimate setting for the event. She received a standing ovation as the talk began and after it ended. Numerous rounds of applause punctuated her words, which covered everything from education to climate change. “Just showing love goes a long way,” Opal said. “Just watching the kids while Mom goes to the store. Or helping this old lady across the street from you. Other small things lead to big things. And we can do it. I just ask you to get with it.” Opal, 97, is often called the “grandmother of Juneteenth.” She started working in 2016 to have Juneteenth declared a federal holiday, drawing attention to the cause by symbolically walking from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., to get congressional support. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved people of African descent in Texas learned they were free after the Civil War. They were the last people to be emancipated. In large part because of Opal’s efforts, President Joe Biden made the celebration a federal holiday in 2021. Biden recently awarded Opal the Presidential Medal of Freedom. After the event, Jared talked about connections between Texas Health’s work and Opal’s ideas. “One is the great work Texas Health is doing in Community Health Improvement, really looking outside the four walls of the hospital out into the communities,” he said. “And living Our Texas Health Promise: Individuals Caring For Individuals, Together, we have the opportunity every single day with every patient we treat, every single person who comes through our doors, to show them love. Small acts of kindness go a really long way and that was one of her messages that really resonated with me."
