The Survey Field Crew Chief oversees all field operations, is the point of contact for clients out in the field, and is familiar with all survey equipment and its uses.
Essential Duties
- Oversees all field operations, such as measurements, equipment use, drawing of sketches, construction staking, property corner staking, and other data collection.
- Acts as the point of contact for clients in the field; responsible for distributing relevant information, answering questions, and relaying concerns or problems to the Survey Supervisor.
- Accurately communicates the state and progress of a project to the Survey Supervisor and/or the engineer in charge.
- Oversees survey data collection, taking accurate field notes, performing basic survey calculations, downloading field data, and copying and filing all associated field notes in the office.
- Provides guidance to technicians on the use of survey equipment and standard survey practices.
- Has basic knowledge of surveying laws in order to alert the Survey Supervisor and Senior Surveyors of potential problems on projects.
- Assures that crew members follow standard procedures.
- Performs field survey activities to meet standards set by the company, state agencies, and the surveying industry.
- Use field data and notes to draft projects to completion using CADD software.
- Operates GPS equipment and has knowledge of its capabilities.
- Operates and is familiar with scanning equipment.
- Oversees daily downloading of data collectors.
- Troubleshoots problems with field equipment and fixes minor issues in the field.
- Cuts and clears brush and trees from the line of survey.
- Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
- Leadership and supervisory skills.
- Excellent technical knowledge of all survey, scanning, and GPS equipment.
- Clear communication skills.
- Knows basic First Aid.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Ability to read and understand plats, construction plans, and other design plans.
- Proficient in trigonometry, geometry, algebra, coordinate geometry, and basic surveying computations.
- Has basic knowledge of surveying laws and practices.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 5+ years experience working with field crews or 3+ years experience working with field crews as a Certified Survey Technician Level II.
- Certified Survey Technician Level III is encouraged.
