Primary Purpose

Implement the special education assessment process.

Assess the educational, learning styles, and program needs of students referred to special education services. Provide diagnostic information and work cooperatively with instructional personnel to provide the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Master’s degree in educational assessment

Valid Texas teaching certificate

Valid Texas Educational Diagnostician certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of diagnostic procedures, education of special education students, human development, and learning theories

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience

Two years teaching experience

Major Responsibilities And Duties

Assessment

  • Implement the appraisal process within time guidelines for initial referrals and re-evaluations.
  • Demonstrate competence in the selection, administration, and interpretation of formal and informal evaluations to determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and state guidelines.
  • Collect, organize, interpret, and communicate relevant assessment data from student’s cumulative folder, outside evaluation reports or resource people, classroom teachers, parents, principal, and support staff.
  • Conduct classroom observation and personal interviews.
  • Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee to assist with interpretation of assessment data, determining educational need for services, appropriate placement, and develop an Individual Education Plans (IEP) for each student according to district procedures.
  • Use district data management system and evaluation report writer with proficiency and accuracy.

Consultation

  • Participate in SIT meetings and provide interventions/strategies to address educational concerns upon request.
  • Provide staff development training in assigned schools to assist school personnel in implementing quality special education programming, identification and understanding of students with disabilities.
  • Consult with teachers and related service providers regarding the development and implementation of the IEP.
  • Consult with parents concerning the educational needs of students and interpretation of assessment data.
  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals to enhance facilitation of educational programs.

Program Management

  • Interpret and communicate current legal findings related to federal and state law, SBOE rules, and local board policy and procedures in the area of evaluation, planning, placement, and delivery of special education services.
  • Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students, parents, and campus staff.
  • Assist in the selection of appropriate assessment materials, procedures, and equipment.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required within specified timelines.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and local board policy in the areas of evaluation, planning, placement, and delivery of special education services.
  • Comply with all district and local campus requirements, procedures and guidelines.
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve skills and knowledge in best practices related to job assignment.

Communication

  • Develop and maintain a positive, professional, and effective relationship with supervisors, administrators, teachers, campus staff, students, and parents.
  • Effectively communicate in a timely manner with administrators, colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student/parent and school information and records at all times.
  • Participate with others within discipline and department to analyze data, develop improved processes, and train staff in areas of identified need.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying.
