About The Job

In collaboration with the Director of Emergency Management, Director of Security and Facilities Operations Manager, provides leadership and oversight for the environmental safety programs of Southern New Hampshire Health (SNHH) to ensure safety for all patients, employees, providers, and visitors at SNHH facilities. Also responsible for directing and managing the Medical Center’s Environment of Care and Life Safety Program to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies including CMS Accreditation Body, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

What You’ll Do

  • Active member of the Quality & Patient Safety Council. Directs and manages the SNHH Environment of Care and Life Safety Program through development, implementation, coordination and monitoring of ongoing programs and activities for patients, visitors and employees.
  • By appointment of the SNHH C.E.O. performs as Safety Officer with responsibility and authority as outlined in the Board approved Environment of Care Plan.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with other services and departments in SNHH that have responsibilities that affect safety. These include, but are not limited to: Security, Risk Management, Emergency Management, Facilities Engineering, Environmental Services, Infection Prevention, Radiation Safety, and Professional Development.
  • Respond to inquiries concerning safety and environmental concerns.
  • Coordinates testing and inspections of the fire alarm and sprinkler systems. As part of the environmental surveillance program, monitors effectiveness of fire extinguisher inspection program. Conducts and evaluates fire drills in coordination with Facilities Engineering department staff.
  • Conducts investigations of all accidents and environmental safety issues, and implements programs to reduce risk. Evaluates conditions affecting environmental health, conducts investigations and environmental safety issues, and implements programs.
  • Identify changes in regulations; communicate changes, develop action plans.
  • Develop a safety minded culture focused on prevention. Coordinates and provides, as necessary, education related to Environment of Care and Life Safety programs with special attention to EPA and OSHA compliance. Perform the following training duties:
    • Develop orientation and ongoing departmental training programs pertaining to safety, EPA and OSHA.
    • Develop orientation and ongoing training programs related to decontamination of patients and staff based upon “OSHA Best Practices for Hospital-Based First Receivers of Victims from Mass Casualty Incidents Involving the Release of Hazardous Substances.”
    • Develop orientation and ongoing training programs related to emergency evacuation of SNHH facilities.
    • Provide or monitor employee-training sessions.
    • Monitor documentation of mandatory training.
    • Verify employee knowledge levels and effectiveness of training programs.
Who You Are

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or fire science discipline, and or relevant experience.
  • Must be designated as, or working towards the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals or other safety certification recognized by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) or the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).Engineers (ASSE).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience showing progressive environment of care and life safety development.
  • In-depth and up-to-date knowledge of relevant codes and standards associated with regulatory agencies such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Joint Commission (JC).
  • Must have working knowledge of safety engineering principles, risk management, industrial hygiene, and hazardous materials management. Comprehensive knowledge in the area of specialty with a result oriented and environment of care centered focus.
