Senior Vice President / Chief Nursing Officer

JOB SUMMARY:

The CNO in collaboration with the hospital executive and leadership team plans, implements, evaluates, and monitors progress with the hospital/nursing’s vision and goals, polices, procedures and practices for patient care; and facilitates the delivery of high quality and cost-effective health care services. The CNO promotes leadership and directly mentors key management staff, while creating a culture of safety and accountability. A key priority of the CNO role is the enhancement of quality initiatives and development of strong working relationships with physicians throughout the organization.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of 3 years senior management experience in a clinical leadership role, preferably prior experience as CNO, within the state of California.
  • Meets The Joint Commission and Title 22 and Det Norske Veritas ( DNV) regulations for Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Strong demonstrated financial and operational acumen, including a broad knowledge of information technology.
  • A comprehensive understanding of issues facing the health care industry and the implications for future provision of clinical services.
  • Proven success in developing and motivating staff while accomplishing key strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate at all levels of an organization.

EDUCATION:

  • Master’s degree required.

LICENSURES/CERTIFICATION:

  • Current Registered Nurse license in the state of California.
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center certification (ANCC) as a nurse executive preferred.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment.

MUST HAVES:

  • All required licensures, certifications, mandatory education; along with annual occupational health screenings must be completed prior to the expiration date or by the end of the month in which they are due. Reference the Educational Requirements: Must Haves, Mandatory and Unit Based policy (in electronic policy management system) for the specific requirements for this position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ( These are the essential job functions for this position. The essential functions of this job include but may not be limited to those listed in this job description.   • Participates in organizational strategic planning and demonstrates leadership toward the attainment of organizational goals and objectives.
  • Establishes nursing and patient care goals and objectives and approves departmental goals and objectives in alignment with strategic plan and provides leadership and oversight toward attainment.
  • Collaborates with hospital physicians to develop effective strategies for improving the quality of patient care.
  • Determines the types and numbers of staff necessary to provide safe, quality care for all the patient care areas in accordance with standards of practice and regulations.
  • Collaborates with the Education/Quality leadership team assuring the appropriate development and implementation of educational programs and competencies for clinical personnel are in place.
  • Partners with the CIO and other appropriate leaders, to develop, modify or implement effective clinical information systems.
  • Collaborates with key leaders in the development of effective strategies for maximizing the patient experience/ satisfaction across the hospital.
  • Coordinates completion of annual operational and capital budgets of clinical departments in cooperation with department heads and CFO.
  • Mentors and coaches nurse leaders and other clinical management staff in a positive manner. Performs at least one written evaluation annually for each direct report.
  • Ensures clinical/nursing services are delivered in compliance with federal and state laws and rules and regulations of governing agencies. Is primarily responsible for all surveys conducted by state and regulatory agencies regarding clinical services.
  • Provides regular and ongoing written and verbal reports with regards to Nursing Services to the CEO.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Participates in all departmental specific training, Environment of Care (injury/illness prevention, fire/life safety, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, utilities management, medical equipment management, safety, and security management), infection control (standard precautions, TB Exposure Control Plan, Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows safety practices. Understands the importance of safety, including patient safety in the workplace. Maintains a safe environment for self and others.
  • Actively participates in the Patient Safety Program, including event reporting. Identifies sentinel events/near misses and responds per defined organization processes. Participates in education activities and process implementation. Demonstrates advocacy for the patient/customer and appropriately acknowledges patients, customers, and visitors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Primarily an inside building/office environment, well lighted and ventilated, which may consist of multiple treatment and/or work sites.

Requires ability to communicate clearly (in English) verbally and in writing for effective communication with other staff members, physicians, vendors, community members, patients and patient families, employees, and applicants of all socio-economic levels from a diverse cultural and ethnic population.
  • Subject to many interruptions from multiple calls and inquiries and potentially emotional situations involving accidents, injuries, illness and/or death.
  • Handles emergency/crisis situations in accordance with Hospital policy.
  • Answers phones or pages; may carry a beeper/pager.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Potential risk of exposure to hazards from chemicals (toxic and non-toxic), flammable materials, gas or electrical or radiant energy or equipment with/without moving parts.
