Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer

The Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer (SVP/CNO) will report to the EVP, Patient Care Operations and System Chief Nurse Executive (EVP PCO/SCNE) and will serve as a key member of the leadership team at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH), responsible for directing nursing and related patient care programs within the organization’s primary acute care, ambulatory care, and satellite settings in alignment with the organization’s Executive Vice President, Patient Care Operations and System Chief Nursing Executive (EVP PCO/SCNE) and the direction of the organization.

The SVP/CNO Will Be Responsible For

  • Evolving and sustaining an environment that supports excellence in nursing practice and guides the delivery of high quality, safe, family-centered, evidence-based care.
  • Creating effective relationships with senior nursing, physician, and operational leaders, demonstrating the framework of shared leadership and teamwork.
  • Leading quality and operations improvement initiatives that enhance clinical outcomes, patient and family satisfaction and promote high reliability organization (HRO) practices including psychological safety, in concert with leaders in the organization’s program for Patient Safety and Quality (PSQ).
  • Demonstrating collaborative leadership practices to advance staffing effectiveness and resource allocation in the context of competing operational priorities.
  • Contributing to enterprise-wide strategic planning and in alignment with the EVP/SCNE, contribute to nursing and patient care operations strategic planning.
  • Evolving and implement in person/virtual meetings and written communication vehicles to advance organizational alignment.
  • Implementing tools and processes to improve nursing operations e.g., recruitment and hiring metrics, staffing effectiveness, nurse engagement, etc., in concert with HR, Finance, and enterprise analytic team leaders.
  • Working collaboratively with executive leadership colleagues to develop, lead, and sustain succession.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN) and Master of Science degree in nursing practice/administration (MS/MSN) required. BSN degree coupled with a master’s in business administration (MBA) or other healthcare related master’s degrees (e.g., MPH or MHA) degree completion acceptable when coupled with doctoral level preparation completion/near term completion commitment.
  • Completion of doctoral preparation, or commitment to enroll within 24 months of hire via a research-focused degree (PhD or DrPH) or practice-focused degree (DNP) program with timely progression of degree requirements.
  • Educational preparation and prior experience as an advanced-practice registered nurse (APRN) coupled with broad operational leadership capacity is desirable, though not required.
  • Nurse Executive Board Certification (NE-BC / NEA-BC) via ANCC or equivalent bodies e.g., AONL reflecting executive leadership skills and capabilities is required, or commitment to complete within 36 months of hire.
  • Professional licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts prior to date of hire.
