Job Summary

Maintain the city's basic public information function to facilitate effective communication with the public and the media to provide information regarding city policies, operations, programs, services, and news.


Dallas Police Department: The Senior Public Information Officer will assist and execute the Dallas Police Department’s basic public information functions to communicate with the public, the Dallas Police Department, and the media. The Senior Public Information Officer will assist in supervising Media Relations Unit staff will also assist in monitoring and managing the agency’s online presence.

Overview

The Senior Public Information Officer implements and executes the city's basic public information functions to facilitate effective communication with the public and the media providing information regarding city policies, operations, programs, services, and news.


Essential Functions

1 Monitors and supports the effective deliver and communication of information throughout the City; ensures information is accurate and effective while maintaining the City's image.

2 In the absence of the Director and Assistant Director, responds to requests from the City Manager's Office and city departments for counsel and assistance, and inquiries from the public and the media to provide accurate information.

3 Serves as the city's central liaison with the news media to respond to media inquiries; engages professionally with various news agencies when needed.

4 Prepares, stores, and maintains information on key city persons, projects, policies, and activities for assigned departments to furnish information such as biographies and press clippings at the time of a request.

5 Maintains fact sheets notebook for use in speeches by Mayor's and City Manager's Offices, and prepares special speeches upon request; checks information to ensure its accuracy.

6 Coordinates, designs, and prepares advertisements for assigned departments in a daily and weekly newspaper, and special information material presented at public meetings to inform the public about public hearings or special city services.

7 Prepares written materials for the Director or Assistant Director to communicate with the public about the city's budget and provides other financial information as needed for use by the City Council and city management.

8 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.


Knowledge and Skills

1 Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of public relations and journalism.

2 Ability to operate word processing computer programs.

3 Excellent language skills including knowledge of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

4 Ability to speak in public and make presentations to a wide variety of groups.

5 Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with public officials, volunteers, other employees, and general public.

6 Knowledge of all social media, news media, and related platforms.

7 Knowledge of customer service techniques to resolve problems and issues.

8 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

9 Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in a journalism, communications, public relations, public administration, marketing or business field.


EXPERIENCE:

  • Four (4) years of professional level experience in marketing, public/ community relations, mass communications and/or social media management.

AND

  • One (1) year of supervisory or project management experience. (This experience may be included in the required experience listed above.)


EQUIVALENCIES:

  • Associate degree in any field plus six (6) years of the required experience including one (1) year of the stated supervisory/management experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a non-specified field plus six (6) years of the required experience including one (1) year of the stated supervisory/management experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • Master's degree or higher in a specified field plus two (2) years of the required experience including one (1) year of the stated supervisory/management experience will meet the education and experience requirements.

LICENSE:

  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must pass an intensive background investigation and drug test.
  • No FELONY or Class A MISDEMEANOR convictions.
  • No Class B MISDEMEANOR convictions within the last ten (10) years.
  • No family violence convictions.
  • Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any FELONY, Class A, or Class B MISDEMEANOR.
  • Must be available for twenty-four/seven (24/7) call out.


PEREFERENCES:

  • English/Spanish bilingual skills are a plus.

Salary Range



$60,538.39 - $75,672.99



The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
