Job Description

The Times is seeking a versatile and experienced journalist and technologist to join a team focused on innovation in visual journalism from the Photo department.

You will be part of a team responsible for envisioning the future expressions and formats for our visual journalism, and for developing the training and workflows to build those plans. You will join the leadership team in the Photo department, and your role will be to inspire, train and support our staff in developing their skills and experimenting with new approaches. Your work will showcase The Times’s unrivaled photo and video journalism and will highlight the work and expertise of our journalists and visual journalists in the field. You will oversee the collaboration of photographers on assignment, photo editors across many desks, and visual editors across our Photo and Video desks to generate, direct and coordinate the assignment, production and publishing of pieces in a variety of formats, including linear video. You will develop, implement and ensure adherence to streamlined workflow and filing protocol for photo and video assignments, clarifying opportunities and processes for photojournalists gathering video and audio and working with mobile display and new formats in mind.

You will report to a deputy editor on Photo.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

  • Develop, implement and document workflows and training materials for editors and photographers.
  • Deliver 1:1 and small group training sessions on best practices for assigning, shooting, reporting and editing various multimedia presentations. You will be responsible for keeping a library of these training materials updated and maintained.
  • Supervise and give feedback to editors in editing, sequencing and producing multimedia pieces in a variety of formats, with the goal of ultimately empowering them to work independently in end to end creation of said formats.
  • Undertake in-the-field editorial work on occasion as needed to pilot workflows and explore formats.
