Houston Chronicle

Pro Sports Trending Reporter

Job Description

Pro Sports Trending Reporter

The Houston Chronicle is looking for an ambitious and aggressive journalist to cover fan-based trending news from professional sports – primarily Texans, Astros and Rockets – in a fast-paced, competitive market.

The job requires recognizing trends and audience needs, the ability to write quickly and accurately, the flexibility to write breaking news, in-depth analysis and features, and just plain fun stories. This fan-focused reporter should be obsessed with the questions, trends and moments that connect Houston-based fans.

This reporter should be comfortable looking for trends, videos, the perspectives of fans and quickly be able to translate those moments for our digital audience. This reporter will focus on trending news for pro sports fans about the players and teams in the Houston area and collaborate with the beat reporters who cover the teams. Occasionally this reporter will back up the beat reporters in live coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely own the fan conversation in the digital space around the pro sports teams in Houston
  • Focus Houston-based fans as their core audience for their work
  • Work with our beat writers to break news in a competitive environment
  • Balance the demands of day-to-day reporting with the in-depth/unique content that will engage readers and drive subscriptions
  • Think differently on approach to covering pro sports. What was once a story could be a newsletter or database or podcast/Youtube channel.

Requirements

  • Track record of digital journalism that drives audiences
  • Track record of working in a fast-paced breaking news/sports environment
  • Understand audience analytics to help inform and shape coverage
  • Comfortable reporting for social media and leading the social media conversation
  • SEO best practices, including sharp headline writing
  • Desire to experiment in reporting for TikTok and other social platforms
  • Ability to write with clarity and authority
  • Proficiency in AP style and grammar
  • At least three years of reporting experience on a major college or pro beat
