The Decibel team at Austin PBS is looking for a sharp, creative and self-motivated multimedia journalist to serve as the primary liaison between our newsroom and the communities we cover. This role supports Decibel, ourcommunity-led journalism project, with producer duties that include coordinating and hosting listening sessions, developing innovative ways to reach new audiences and producing content from community feedback. We are looking for a strategic thinker who works well with a team and can develop new techniques to support our mission of amplifying diverse voices in Central Texas through in-depth listening and storytelling. Good judgment and journalistic ethics are key in this position since you will often be the first point of contact to the community. A successful community engagement producer will be committed to building trust with the communities we serve, supporting authentic storytelling and being transparent about our work.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Identifies and cultivates key community partnerships, creating a network of relationships that generates accountability for our work while also sharing resources among our community.
Develops new and innovative ways to listen to both existing and new audiences
Pitches and produces stories inspired by audience insights with a special focus on social media content creation
Writes and publishes articles on the Decibel website
Develops and manages success metrics for community engagement efforts
Acts as a liaison between community members and staff, facilitating introductions and connections
Works with the marketing team to explore new social tools and engagement techniques
Partners with our reporters by helping them find sources and overseeing a sharing strategy to help us get our work to the people who need it most
Works with teams across the organization to build audience engagement efforts
Trains and helps editorial staff approach their work through a community-centered lens
Learns about accessibility strategies for reaching audiences with limited sight, hearing, literacy challenges or learning disabilities and committed to ensuring our work better meets those needs.
Fosters an environment of diversity, equity and inclusion
Represents Austin PBS at events as a speaker, moderator or attendee
Coordinates content sharing for other news and/or public affairs content
Performs special projects and other duties as assigned
Requirements
Knowledge & Skills Required:
3+ years of experience in a newsroom, with at least two years of full-time engagement experience
Demonstrated experience with digital engagement tools, platforms and/or database systems
Excellent writing, reporting, editing and engagement skills with the ability to work quickly and accurately
Demonstrated interest in identifying and deploying cutting-edge engagement and audience development ideas
Experience organizing communities and audiences, especially in a journalistic context—either digitally (i.e. Facebook groups, social media or web forms) or in real life (events and forums)
Journalism experience itself, either locally or nationally, especially reporting involving stories that involve underrepresented communities
Demonstrated ability to generate and execute creative ideas and collaborate with others
Experience maintaining high journalistic standards and uncompromising ethics
Ability to work with a flexible schedule that will sometimes include nights and weekends
Familiarity with video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Creative Cloud suite
Familiarity with engaged journalism or audience-centered approaches

This is a full time salaried position that is currently hybrid. Annual salary of $65,000
