Job Description

The Materials Engineer III role is responsible for engineering advancements directed at materials selection, application of engineering materials (metals, polymers, etc.), alternatives analyses and evaluations pertinent to specific product objectives and opportunities. The role entails management of applied materials engineering projects driven by multiple objectives, prediction of behaviors under various environmental and service conditions, functional-economical optimizations, and sustainability measures in alignment with company strategies. Working collaborative across the enterprise, the positions includes engagement with global business units in reviews, recommendations, and advisory on matters related to materials engineering and technologies for the product applications.

This position will serve our Water Heater Division, located in Montgomery, AL.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate new materials technology applications to realize betterment of product service life, achievement of technical objectives, promoting reduced environmental impacts, and offering cost benefit objectives.
  • Facilitate materials selection and advisory for new concepts and alternatives including factors of product function, part shape, manufacturing operations, materials properties, usage costs, timing, and other screening criteria.
  • Define methods of test, coordinate the implementation of experiments, evaluate test results, and prepare reports of research findings relative to materials investigations.
  • Operationally support Materials Laboratory ensuring general capabilities for mechanical and chemical measurements, microscopic assessment, and failure analysis.
  • Coordinate periodic assessment of base material (e.g. steel, porcelain-enamel, polymer resin, insulation) as-received/as-manufactured mechanical properties to maintain component level performance measure comparables.
  • Provide technical guidance to personnel supporting projects.Share engineering information and promote open dialogue, Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments.
  • Document technical data generated for the assigned projects for knowledge sharing and best practices guidance.
  • Represent company in technical societies and keep the company advised of pertinent technological developments.
  • Operationally support Materials Laboratory ensuring general capabilities for mechanical and chemical measurements, microscopic assessment, and failure analysis.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering disciplines
  • 5 years of related experience in applied materials research, materials selection, performance validation and service life prediction; analyses of fatigue, corrosion, oxidation, wear, or other degradation mechanisms avoidance.
  • Hands on experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team among design, manufacturing, and quality functions, in application of a standardized product development process, to achieve commercialized products.
  • Working knowledge of statistical methods, Design-of-Experiments (DOE), and reliability engineering principles.
  • Working knowledge of design sprints and agile development methods to accelerate discovery of opportunities and inform technology projects involving materials considerations.

  • Proven professional mentoring and communications skills
  • Ability to compose professional business correspondence for internal and external dissemination
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively with all levels of internal management, staff members, external suppliers, and customers

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Materials Engineering, or Metallurgical Engineering disciplines
  • Proven engineering project management experience

Certificates, Licenses, And Registrations

  • Professional Engineering License preferred
