Job Description

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

Incumbent(s) may be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position specific duties.

Horticulture General Purpose: Performs a variety of grounds keeping and general maintenance functions for the Minot Park District Horticulture Department.

Horticulture Tech-March 1-November 30

  • Assist in maintaining the Districts’ park, zoo grounds and athletic complexes in a safe, clean and visually appealing manner for enjoyment by the public
  • Applies fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical agents to assigned park grounds
  • Assist in watering and mowing as needed of assigned park grounds
  • Provide assistance as needed with shelter cleaning, trash removal and scheduling of special events year round
  • Assists in fall cleanup including raking and leaf removal of assigned park grounds
  • May prepare employee schedules, assign work duties and provide training to departmental personnel as assigned
  • Assist the Horticulturalist in greenhouse management which may include planting, watering, insect control and maintenance of greenhouse
  • Aid in all sports field operations which may include grounds maintenance, fertilizer and chemical application, aeration, watering and direction to Field Manager
  • Provide assistance to the Horticulturalist in all areas of departmental operations and perform Horticulturalist duties as lead groundskeeper in their absence

Maintenance General Purpose: Performs a variety of routine maintenance and minor repair work for the Minot Park District’s buildings and facilities.

Maintenance Tech- December 1-February 28

  • Assists in maintaining the District’s buildings and facilities including the zoo, golf course, soccer complex, outdoor hockey rinks, pools, playgrounds, tennis center, auditorium, ball diamonds and pathways.
  • Assists with new construction and/or remodeling projects; constructs additions to buildings and/or picnic shelters, installs or replaces windows, doors, flooring, roofing siding, drywall and concrete.
  • Build, install, repair, and maintain fences and gates.
  • Install, maintain, inspect, and remove playground equipment in accordance with safety regulations and standards.
  • Performs regular preventive maintenance and assists in ensuring buildings and facilities are safely and properly maintained for use by the public.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections and safety inspections, evaluates conditions and brings deficiencies to the attention of the Maintenance supervisor.
  • Prepares and maintains outdoor hockey rinks, assists with the making of ice.
  • Paints buildings, walls, doors and trim, removes old paint and pressure washes buildings.
  • Performs basic carpentry work including building and installing cabinetry, bookcases, and shelves.
  • Performs basic electrical repair including replacing bulbs, switches, timers, and receptacles.
  • Performs basic plumbing repairs including replacing faucets, unclogging drains and irrigation systems.
  • Assists in removing snow from sidewalks, pathways, parking lots, roadways, and outdoor ice rinks.
  • Assists with building and/or facility maintenance activities as required.
  • Assists other employees on larger projects.
  • Purchases and/or order supplies with approval from Maintenance supervisor.
  • Obtains pricing information for job materials and/or prepares construction drawings as required.
  • Process work orders and ensure maintenance requests are completed in a timely manner.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of departmental records and documentation.
  • Operates heavy equipment used in construction and grounds maintenance including skid steers, dump trucks, garbage trucks, pay loaders, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, telehandlers and compact tractors.
  • Operate a vehicle, trailer equipment, and pick up supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent, and some experience relating to Primary Duties listed for the position. Horticulture - Preferred two years Horticulture related degree or worked in the Horticulture and Arena Maintenance field for 2 years

Maintenance - five years of carpentry/construction/building maintenance experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS or ability to begin earning Licenses and Certifications

Revised-Must possess a clean driving record with the ability to obtain a Class A or B North Dakota Driver’s License

Horticulture – ND Pesticide License or Certification

Maintenance - Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and Certified Playground Safety inspector (CPSI)

First Aid/CPR Certification,

REQUIRED SKILL IN HORTICULTURE:

Supervising, Leading, Delegating tasks, schedules, projects and authority.

Excellent Communication and Customer Service skills are essential for this position.

Ensuring the Facility, Parks, Grounds and Greenhouse is properly maintained, and all safety standards are adhered to.

REQUIRED SKILLS IN MAINTENANCE:

Coordinating and performing a variety of skilled building maintenance functions.

Assisting in ensuring the district’s buildings and facilities are safely and properly maintained.

Repairing minor electrical and plumbing fixtures.

Maintaining swimming pools, outdoor hockey rinks and playground facilities.

Performing preventative maintenance in accordance with established schedules.

Accurately reading blueprints, sketches, and drawings.

Maintaining accurate departmental records and documentation.

Safely operating equipment and performing general facilities maintenance duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Horticulture- Work is performed in and around all parks, fields, zoo grounds and greenhouses.

Maintenance - Work is performed in a building maintenance environment and involves equipment operation and climbing ladders.

Work may be performed in all types of weather conditions.

Applicant must be able to lift objects up to 75pounds.

POSITION SCHEDULE

This is a 40-Hour per Week position and two mandated days off each week. Work schedule will depend on which department you are in.
