Position Overview

The library media program should be an integral part of the schools’ curriculum. The School Library Media Specialist plans, directs, implements, and evaluates the library program.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all the responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:

  • Provides leadership in all aspects of the school media program.
  • Assists students in becoming effective and discriminating users of library resources.
  • Helps students develop habits of independent reference work and skills in the use of reference material in relations to planned assignments.
  • Help students develop independent reading habits by providing opportunities during non-instructional times.
  • Develops a research and library skills program relating to the needs of the students.
  • Provide leadership for school literacy committee, coordinating school wide improvement in research and writing.
  • Coordinates Senior Project, including supervision and support for individual research projects.
  • Plans with teachers, when appropriate, for meaningful and effective grade appropriate reference work and/or literature.
  • Is aware of and supports the curriculum through collection development.
  • Develops a collection that supports the curriculum.
  • Organizes library material, equipment, and facilities for effective and efficient utilization and circulation.
  • Keeps the collection current within the constraints of the annual budget by purchasing quality print and non-print materials.
  • Maintains appropriate records of library materials.
  • Through a working knowledge of books and authors in the collection, assists students with reading selections.
  • Provides leadership for summer reading committee and associated cross curriculum activities.
  • Guides students in finding and using a wide variety of materials.
  • Allocates and manages expenditures of assigned budget funds on the basis of curricular and replacement needs.
  • Organizes and supervises the ordering, checking, processing, and maintaining of media center materials.
  • Assists staff and students with technology.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of software.
  • Provides basic instruction to staff or students for equipment use.
  • Assists staff with computer and/or AV equipment problems.
  • Works to complete building goals and district exit outcomes.
  • Meets assigned building and district responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Below are the qualifications for this position:

  • Must be eligible for State of Delaware Certification as a Library Media Specialist.
  • Knowledge of Delaware State Content Standards, Assessment & Accountability.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, & computer skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices.
  • Criminal background check and Tuberculin testing.

The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this position:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment. Work may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • All persons employed by the Appoquinimink School District are required to submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide the following: proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver’s License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A., completion of I-9 form, and completion of paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
