Legislative and Political Affairs Manager

The American Urological Association (AUA), the premier urologic association providing support to the urologic community, is currently searching for a Legislative & Political Affairs Manager position. The position is primarily located in Washington, DC. Minimal travel to the AUA’s headquarters in Linthicum, MD is required.

This position is temporarily remote and will have the possibility to telecommute up to 3 days a week.

In General

This position is responsible for lobbying members of Congress and their staff and supporting the AUA’s comprehensive program for federal legislative activities affecting urology nationwide. In addition, this position is the staff liaison for the Legislative Affairs Committee (LAC) and the Holtgrewe Legislative Fellowship program, as well as organizes and oversees other advocacy operations and activities (such as staffing work groups that fall under the jurisdiction of the LAC and assisting with the Annual Urology Advocacy Summit and AUAPAC).

The Individual In This Position

  • Monitors, analyzes, and influences legislative proposals that have the potential to affect the delivery of urologic care. Educates legislators and key staff members regarding the AUA’s position on relevant issues.
  • Establishes and maintains liaison with key congressional and committee staff responsible for and interested in policies and programs that affect the practice of urology.
  • Cultivates, facilitates, and coordinates member contacts with legislators and key staff.
  • Serves as the staff liaison for the LAC, ensuring they receive timely information about legislative activities at the federal level.
  • Tracks federal legislation through major publications, daily updates noting newly introduced bills; writing the legislative analysis document for review.
  • Serves as the staff liaison for the Holtgrewe Legislative Fellowship Program. Works on the annual budget, manages the application process and finds congressional offices to host fellows.
  • Represents the department and the AUA during coalition activities when appropriate.

To be Successful

Role

Candidates must be collaborative while working in a fast-paced team environment. It is essential that the individual in this role have knowledge of the federal legislative process, ability to communicate with physician leaders, results-oriented and be an effective decision maker. In addition:

  • Bachelor of Arts required, preferably in political science, social science, or related field relevant to government or healthcare.
  • A minimum of 5 years of government relations experience required. Project management skills also are required. Capitol Hill experience not required but highly preferred.
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented, able to multi-task, and respond effectively to multiple staff members’ requests. Requires strong ability to effectively plan, organize and complete assignments on time.
  • Knowledge of government and regulatory process needed, including campaign finance law.
  • Must have ability to work independently and as part of a team in a collaborative manner under tight deadlines to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills required.
  • Must be able to write clearly, concisely, and accurately and be capable of writing memoranda, drafting correspondence, white papers, and similar materials with limited to no supervision.
  • Familiarity with membership databases and MS Office suite, including, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. required.
  • Flexible work hours (i.e., ability to work before/after core hours when needed).
