Container Rates Now Four Times Higher Than Pre-Pandemic Levels. Drewry’s composite global index increased by 10%, driven by significant rate increases on major trade routes. Container freight rates are continuing their upward trajectory, with Q3 2024 poised to be one of the most profitable quarters in history. Recent rate increases in July are taking hold, contributing to a significant rise in shipping costs across major routes. Drewry’s composite global index saw a 10% increase yesterday, reaching $5,868 per FEU (forty-foot equivalent unit). Although this is 43% below the pandemic peak of $10,377 in September 2021, it is still 313% higher than the average 2019 pre-pandemic rate of $1,420. #freightrates #containershipping #inflation Manish Nair Candice Rucaj Brad Appel https://lnkd.in/gvzm3QS8

Canadian border agents ratify labor deal. The new agreement for the more than 9,000 represented employees runs through June 2026. Canadian border agents overwhelmingly ratified a new four-year labor agreement, the government of Canada and the Public Service Alliance of Canada and Customs and Immigration Union announced July 4. More than 90% of the members who cast ballots voted in favor of the new labor deal, which covers the period between June 2022 and June 2026. A spokesperson for the union would not disclose how many of the more than 9,000 represented members participated in the ratification vote. The union and the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat reached a tentative four-year labor agreement on June 11, with the two sides reaching a consensus after nine days of mediated talks. The represented members of the Canada Border Services Agency had been working without a contract for two years. #CBSA #brorderservices #unionagreement #customscompliance https://lnkd.in/gcATEDxT

B.C. longshore foreman strike averted after Industrial Relations Board steps in. On Friday, the BCMEA said ILWU Local 514 — the union representing hundreds of the province’s ship and dock foremen — issued a 72-hour notice of intended strike against terminal operator company DP World (Canada) Inc. A strike by ship and dock foremen at B.C.’s ports has been averted after a decision from Canada’s Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). According to a release from B.C.’s Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), the CIRB found the strike action went against Canada’s Labour Code. As a result, the board has ordered ILWU Local 514 to rescind their strike notice and advise their members about it. #BC #BCMEA #ILWU #strike #portstrike https://lnkd.in/gU7eVKrU

Forwarders and shippers brace for Q4 hike in air cargo rates. Airlines are looking ahead to air cargo’s fourth quarter peak season to decide how best to maximise returns from capacity out of Asia as spot rates are predicted to go sky high. With a backdrop of more demand and less capacity, industry analyst Xeneta has warned that shippers and forwarders seeking capacity during the fourth quarter may find themselves “at the mercy of the market”, especially if they looking to move shipments out of #AsiaPacific. Peak season #surcharges and major increases in #spotrates are expected, said Niall van de Wouw, chief airfreight officer at Xeneta. “There’s a consensus it will be a hot Q4 for air cargo in many Asian markets.” #freightforwarding #freightrates #exports #imports #aircargo https://lnkd.in/eeAz3r_U

Managing freight spend is the biggest concern for shippers and forwarders, as the supply chain volatility driving ocean rate hikes appears to have no end in sight. In Xeneta’s mid-year ocean freight update, CEO and co-founder Patrik Berglund said: “Carriers were expecting to record massive financial losses in 2024, but the skyrocketing #spotmarket will see them deliver a full-year profit, which seemed improbable six months ago.” Indeed, while the Xeneta outlook in October suggested a volatile spot market, it noted this week that “the level of volatility witnessed in 2024 is beyond earlier expectations”. “Volatility in 2024 is demonstrated through an initial spike in spot rates on major trades out of the Far East at the start of the year, spot rates then began to soften before escalating once again in May, demonstrating there can still be market movement in both directions even while the underlying impact of the #RedSeacrisis remains,” the crowd sourced analytics platform explained. #freightforwarding #freightrates #volatility #exports #logisticssolutions https://lnkd.in/eYrdRxnm
