Little Place Labs is a space technology (SpaceTech) startup with a vision of making satellites and space robots intelligent, autonomous and decentralized as we enter into the new era of commercially exploiting space-derived insights and resources. We do this by bringing AI into Space through AI/ML applications. We focus on satellite edge computing, developing cutting-edge solutions for real-time data analysis directly onboard satellites to enable faster decision-making and reduce data downlink needs. Based across the US, Europe and India, our team works on solving complex challenges in earth observation, space situational awareness, and autonomous satellite operations.


POSITION SUMMARY

As the LEAD DATA SCIENTIST heading the Data Science Team and reporting to the CTO, you will lead the development of the LPL’s space data analytics product Orbitfy, explore different use cases for the technology, and work closely to strategize the product and company's roadmap for the next 3-4 years. Little Place Lab's data science team is the heart and the brain of our product development offering space-derived analytics as the source of truth for key stakeholders to make critical and timely decisions. You will work closely with the CTO, machine learning engineers, data scientists, and interns to apply sophisticated modeling techniques to a modern data stack and build the future of space-edge Computing. This is a remote position, with some occasional travel to locations within the US.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development of the Orbitfy Edge - LPL’s Satellite Edge Computing ML Solution Strategic Planning: Contribute to the strategic planning of AI/ML projects, identifying potential challenges and opportunities for growth within the team and broader organization. Algorithm Development: Design, develop, and implement state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms for satellite imagery analysis, including object detection, image segmentation, and pattern recognition.
  • Data Handling: Manage and process large datasets of satellite imagery (such as optical, thermal, multispectral, hyperspectral, SAR, and telemetry), ensuring efficient data manipulation, preprocessing, and augmentation techniques.
  • Model Training and Optimization: Train, fine-tune, and optimize deep learning models for on-board deployment, focusing on maximizing efficiency and accuracy while minimizing computational and power requirements.
  • Innovation and Research: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in computer vision and machine learning, proposing and implementing innovative solutions to improve project outcomes.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure the reliability and robustness of computer vision solutions through comprehensive testing, validation, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed documentation of algorithms, models, and processes; prepare reports and presentations for technical and non-technical audiences. Communicate with technical and non-technical audiences and translate between the domains of business problems and implementations.
  • Work on Edge deployment of ML applications on SoC and feed into work for the FPGAs Formulate data visualization techniques to communicate complex topics in approachable ways.
  • Work with Products to provide technical inputs to help facilitate Product market fit. Stakeholder Communication: Serve as the point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding work progress, technical challenges, and solutions.
  • Engage in knowledge sharing and best practices within the team and across the company. Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Geo-Information Science (GIS) engineering and software teams to integrate ML solutions into the broader data processing pipeline.


SUCCESS METRICS

  • Manage the delivery drops of the Orbitfy Edge application (ML part) for chosen use cases in time for satellite launch or user testing.
  • Mentor and manage the data science team.
  • Contribute to supporting tech strategy and product roadmap.
  • Supporting business development activities


DESIRED TRAITS

  • Experience: 10+ years
  • Educational - Holds an advanced degree in Data Science and/or extensive experience of working in Data Science for big and small organizations.
  • Technical - Solid experience of data science tools and techniques across a range of algorithms, especially in Computer Vision
