Lab Assistant (DGOF-LAB)

The Pathology Laboratory Assistant position will assist with general administrative duties at the lab. Note: This is not a technical role. This position will also perform basic functions to aid in the preparation of the histopathology samples, working under the general supervision of the Lab Manager, Supervisor, as well as a trained & certified Histotechnician.

Essential key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Receive, process, and label laboratory specimens.
  • Handle and appropriately disburse laboratory data.
  • Required to maintain up to date knowledge and competency on required accessioning functions.
  • Required to utilize multiple computer applications in order to establish patient data.
  • Independently handle tissue, assure adequacy and triage specimens based on set guidelines.
  • Responsible for recognizing and resolving specimen discrepancies.
  • Must wear proper PPE when working in laboratory areas.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of lab and work area.
  • Acts as a resource for specimen collection and handling requirements, and laboratory maintenance procedures.
  • Operate, clean and sterilize laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments.
  • Maintain and create logs (opening, closing, daily checks, daily count) (know how to use Excel and Word).
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of supplies.
  • Instrumentation maintenance.
  • Maintain organization and disposal of specimen containers.
  • Prepare materials for Pathologist diagnosis by updating patient information in computer applications.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA and CLIA regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, registration functions, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to learn quickly as technology, policies, and insurance requirements change.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage time.
  • Ability to make decisions quickly and independently, and work effectively, in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to be an effective team member.
  • Ability to possess a flexible schedule and have the ability to work long hours when necessary.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues as they arise while maintaining other responsibilities.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including problem solving, decision making and organizational skills.
  • Excellent telephone and other verbal and written communication skills required.
  • High school or equivalent
  • Associate's degree (AA) (Preferred)
  • Laboratory experience: 1 year (Preferred)
  • Clerical experience: 1 year (Preferred)
  • Experience with LIS's, EMRs or PM systems

Wage Range - $16.00/hr to $20.00/hr DOE
