Job Introduction

BBC News Mundo is part of the BBC World Service, an international multimedia broadcaster delivering a wide range of language and regional services, working increasingly with other parts of BBC News to serve global audiences. We use multiple platforms to reach millions of people globally.

BBC News Mundo provides news, explainers, context and original stories to Spanish speaking audiences across Latin America and beyond, through direct digital platforms and social media. This includes our own site as well as channels on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok and Whatsapp.

We are looking for a Journalist who is passionate about digital journalism to help us to consolidate our growth and value reach. You will work in the Miami bureau in close collaboration with the rest of BBC Mundo’s team.

The selected candidate will create original and impactful content for BBC Mundo. Video skills will be an advantage.

You should be a creative and versatile journalist, with a strong understanding of what makes good digital journalism and digital video and how it is consumed on different platforms.

The role requires sound editorial judgment, understanding of international affairs as well as Latin American affairs, sharp writing and/or video editing skills and the ability respond to breaking news. Candidates should enjoy working under pressure and bring plenty of story and treatment ideas to the role.

Main Responsibilities

  • Propose, research, report, write, and/or edit original multimedia stories and translate or adapt material from other outlets.
  • Find contributors and interviewees and other sources as required whilst maintaining the standards of accuracy, impartiality and fair dealing stated in the BBC’s Producers guidelines.
  • Ensure that all stories are properly illustrated with images, audio, video or interactivity as appropriate.
  • Use a range digital equipment and information technology to research, report, produce write or translate articles or scripts, edit and adapt videos or TV programme material.
  • Write timely, accurate, engaging digital video scripts
  • Film and edit video in a timely and creative way.
  • Suggest new angles for existing stories for any of BBC Mundo platforms.
  • Conduct interviews and 2/ways either in the studio or on location, live or pre-recorded.
  • Be responsible for efficient use of allocated resources.
  • With the support of the Bureau Editor, to help increasing the number of videos produced in the Miami bureau and the region and to incorporate the video mind set in the team’s workflows and priorities.
  • Have a deep understanding of metric analytics to understand video audiences needs and create content relevant for them.
  • Undertake interactive tasks with the audience in social media
  • Ensure that BBC Editorial principles and all relevant legal, contractual and copyright requirements are met, referring upwards in cases of difficulty or doubt.
  • Able to prioritise in order to deliver material in tight deadlines.
  • All producers may be required to travel off base on short reporting trips and assignments.
  • All digital journalists may be required to work with or move to other teams and to have the ability to work across a range of skills and in a flexible manner, and to carry out these responsibilities in accordance with the BBC’s overall standards and values.

Are you the right candidate?

  • A full command and up to date knowledge of Spanish as first (or equivalent) language.
  • Excellent written Spanish and an ability to use language to tell a story effectively.
  • Experience with digital video
  • Experience of shooting and editing videos for Social Media.
  • Experience with live and recorded video presentation would be an advantage.
  • Evidence of recent original journalistic work of impact in the target area.
  • Complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Experience of reporting in the field, on international and/or Latin American current affairs issues would be an advantage.
  • Interest in a broad news agenda.
  • Wide and up to date familiarity with the target area and an in-depth understanding of its history, politics, social issues and culture as well as the changing needs of the audience.
  • A thorough knowledge of the aims, objectives and standards of BBC World Service.
  • An understanding of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda and a wider interest in the strategy of the BBC as a whole.

Band: C
