HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER

VSC - UP PAT Bargaining Unit, Grade 12, Exempt

Basic Function

To serve as Head Athletic Trainer to the athletic program working with varsity athletes in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries.

Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides services to athletes who are participating on VTSU-Lyndon varsity athletic teams.
  • Identify, assess and care for athletic injuries, including referral to physicians and outside medical facilities as appropriate.
  • Manage and rehabilitate injuries under a physician’s direction as appropriate.
  • Coordinate an ongoing injury prevention program through conditioning, safety checks, and formal and informal instruction of athletes in injury prevention.
  • Coordinate proper physical screening examinations for all VTSU-Lyndon athletes.
  • Consult with coaches when appropriate.
  • Maintain appropriate clinical records and prepare reports as required.
  • Administer a college-wide program for the prevention and care of athletic injuries.
  • Keep up-to-date on current developments in athletic training methods, technology, and trends in athletic education.
  • Supervision of Associate Athlete Trainer.

Supervision Received

General supervision is received from the Athletic Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in athletic training, sports medicine, physical education, or related/appropriate discipline with masters preferred; plus two years of relevant higher education athletics experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

  • National Athletic Trainers Association Certification (NATABOC) for at least two years.
  • Strong academic orientation and a sincere interest in the professional preparation of student athletic trainers enrolled in an athletic training education program.
  • Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist eligible.

Knowledge

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to deal effectively with students, college personnel, and others outside of the university.
  • Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting.
  • Awareness of developmental, holistic, and proactive approaches to student success.

Skills

  • Strong and varied technical skills and interest in recreational activities.
  • Broad base of knowledge and skills related to athletic facilities, management, coaching, recruiting and other relevant experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with (or ability to learn) technologies such as SSE, Colleague, Self-Service, Slate, Microsoft products, and Perceptive Content.
  • Proven record of accountability and follow-through with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be a certified Athletic Trainer.

  • Demonstrated ability to positively influence student skill development, such as communication skills, leadership skills, academic skills, technical skills, non-cognitive or ‘soft’ skills, and social skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster student development in the attainment of student success goals, such as academic purpose, sense of belonging/identity, agency, career readiness, civic readiness, access & equity.
  • Demonstrated positive attitude regarding Vermont State University and a desire to improve student outcomes, including attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals within the University and capacity to work as part of a team to collaborate and choose student success.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel as well as external stakeholders in carrying out the various coordination, liaison, and other aspects of the job.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings.
