General Manager (less than $5M in revenue) - focus on Product Management/Business Development


Position Summary

The Small Business General Manager will hold overall responsibility for achieving growth and profitability targets with a hands-on roll up sleeves on sales, marketing, and business development. This role will provide direct leadership and operational oversight for the company, ensuring that all business activities align with the company’s strategic goals.


Major Job Functions (%)

Growth Strategy Development (35%):

  • Develop and implement a direct, comprehensive growth strategy for the company.
  • Conduct market research to identify new industries and market segments for existing products.
  • Develop strategies for entering new markets, both domestically and internationally.
  • Identify and evaluate acquisitions based on market potential and strategic fit.
  • Plan and execute the addition of new personnel to support growth initiatives, ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic goals.
  • Design and implement new processes or optimize existing ones to enhance operational efficiency and support growth objectives.
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of growth strategies and make necessary adjustments to achieve desired outcomes.


Business and Market Development (30%):

  • Direct all long-term business and market development activities to secure new business opportunities.
  • Identify potential partnerships, alliances, and acquisitions to drive business expansion and market penetration.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with key stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, and industry partners.
  • Assess the competitive landscape and identify opportunities for differentiation and competitive advantage.
  • Develop and implement action plans to lead the company into its next growth phase, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives.
  • Continue to expand and deepen the company’s channel partnerships, exploring new distribution channels and sales opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to develop and execute effective marketing campaigns and initiatives.


Hands-On Leadership and Operational Oversight (20%):

  • Provide strategic direction and hands-on leadership to achieve annual sales, profitability, cash flow, and business development goals.
  • Oversee daily operational activities, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in delivering products and services.
  • Implement and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress and adjust, as necessary.
  • Foster a positive work environment that encourages teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure cost-effective, technically superior, and timely solutions to meet market and customer requirements.
  • Actively engage with team members to create a culture that embraces professionalism, continuous improvement, and personal development.


Financial and Performance Reporting (10%):

  • Prepare and present detailed financial analyses, forecasts, and budgets to the executive team and stakeholders.
  • Establish and manage the annual budget, producing detailed annual sales, operations, and business development strategies and initiatives.
  • Monitor financial performance against budget and take corrective actions as needed to achieve financial targets.
  • Ensure transparency and accuracy in financial reporting, maintaining compliance with accounting standards and regulations.


Business Management (5%):

  • Represent the company with key customers, vendors, industry executives, governmental bodies, and civic organizations.
  • Maintain effective communication and collaboration with the Global Business Area Manager and other key stakeholders.
  • Ensure the company complies with legal and regulatory requirements.


Critical Selection Criteria

  • Education: BS in engineering, business, or a related field; MBA preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 15 years in sales, marketing, and/or business development, with at least 8-10 years of progressive management experience and 5 years in senior management roles.
