Position Purpose

Implements the District integrated pest control management program; oversees and applies pesticides and herbicides according to the District pest management policy.

Essential Job Functions

Structural Pest Control

  • Implements the integrated pest control program for the use of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical agents to control pests, rodents, insects, and weeds at District buildings and facilities.
  • Ensures that all pesticides used property comply with District policy and Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) requirements.
  • Maintains inventory of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; orders additional supplies as needed.
  • Labels and secures pesticides; maintains files required, including pesticide application records, pesticide labels, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and records of complaints.
  • Participates in required TDA Structural Pest Control Service integrated pest management training courses.

Communication

  • Communicates with District administrators and staff about integrated pest management, including training, notice and posting, sanitation, and pesticide storage.
  • Posts appropriate notice in District facilities prior to planned pesticide treatment according to TDA requirements.
  • Responds to requests and inquiries relating to pest problems from staff, students, parents, and the public.

Safety

  • Ensures that all school employees who perform pest control have the necessary training and utilize appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

  • Performs all job-related duties as assigned and in accordance to the Board rules, policies and regulations. All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of safety protocols, and District rules and regulations applicable to pest control.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance practices and procedures and the proper use of equipment.
  • Knowledge of methods and materials for pest control and TDA regulations.
  • Skill in operating pesticide application equipment.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Ability to read and understand procedure manuals, operating manuals, assembly instructions, safety precautions, MSDS, work orders, and instructions from superiors.
  • Ability to perform moderately heavy manual tasks under variable and sometimes adverse weather conditions; and to work at various heights.
  • Ability to use software to status work orders, do email, and do word processing.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Power and hand-held sprayer application equipment; hand and power tools; truck or van.
  • Posture: Frequent standing, stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting; works in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving.
  • Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis.
  • Environment: Works outside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical (pesticides) hazards, noxious odors; works around machinery with moving parts; may work alone and in tight or enclosed spaces; may require occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours; frequent driving.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • Certification/License:
    • Clear and valid Texas Driver's License required;
    • Insurable by the District's insurance carrier required;
    • Valid Non-Commercial Certified Applicator License granted by the TDA.
  • Experience: 3 years’ in pest control.
Insurability Requirements For All Drivers

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
  • Driving and accident record:

Valid Texas Department of Public Safety Driver Record Check Type 3A-Certified list of all crashes and violations http://dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/driverrecords.htm

  • NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
    • moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
    • failure to provide proof of valid driver’s license or proof of insurance;
    • equipment violations.
  • NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
  • NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
  • NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
  • NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver’s license.
  • NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
  • NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
  • NO operating a vehicle without owner’s permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
  • NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
  • NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
  • NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.
  • Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD’s Fleet Insurance Carrier.
