We're partnering with a major Oil & Gas company to find an Environmental Specialist (Waste) to join their operations in the Greater New Orleans area. Relocation will be provided if needed, but we are not able to support any visas or sponsorship.


SUMMARY:

The Environmental Specialist - Waste is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive waste management program. This includes making waste determinations, ensuring wastes and used oil are properly managed onsite, approving off-site treatment, disposal, and recycling facilities, scheduling waste transfers, fulfilling required record-keeping and reporting to regulatory agencies, and training staff to respond to waste emergencies and ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations. The Environmental Specialist - Waste must have working knowledge of the federal (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)) and state regulations for solid waste, hazardous waste, and universal waste, and Department of Transportation regulations for hazardous materials.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Make regulatory waste determinations and prepare waste profiles for all wastes generated, including obtaining representative samples and laboratory analysis as needed.
  • Ensure satellite and central accumulation areas for hazardous wastes are managed in compliance with RCRA and state regulations.
  • Ensure used oil is managed in compliance with RCRA and state regulations.
  • Ensure solid waste is managed in compliance with state regulations.
  • Conduct inspections of all waste management areas at the facility, including contractor-generated waste management activities.
  • Schedule off-site transfers of wastes and used oil, including preparing uniform hazardous waste manifests, DOT hazardous materials shipping papers, and other required waste management documents.
  • Prepare required reports and other documents for state and federal environmental agencies.
  • Maintain records required to demonstrate compliance with applicable waste management regulations.
  • Assist in the implementation of the hazardous waste contingency plan.
  • Prepare and provide appropriate training to all staff with responsibilities for waste management.
  • Review and approve all off-site treatment, disposal, and recycling facilities that receive waste and used oil from the facility.
  • Assist the Environmental Manager with meetings and other interactions with regulatory agencies.
  • Research federal and state regulatory requirements as needed.
  • Conduct internal audits of waste management activities.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or similar field.

Experience:

  • 5 years in industrial facilities as a waste or environmental coordinator or manager.

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, state hazardous waste regulations (or another state’s solid and hazardous waste regulations), such as a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager credential.

Certifications:

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card in good standing.

Skills:

  • Good communication skills.
  • Must be able to work in hot and humid environments, outdoors, and lift 50 pounds.
  • Proficiency with computers, including Apple Mac and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, Project, and PowerPoint).
