Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate full-time opportunity for a Environmental Specialist, located at the Bay City Factory in Bay City, Michigan.

Job Summary

The Factory Environmental Specialist is responsible for the daily operations of the environmental operations that include and support the wastewater treatment plant, air monitoring/reporting, waste disposal, storm water and environmental laboratory bench.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Wastewater
    • Record data on daily operation of Anamet, including gas generation, temperature and flow
    • Check influent pumps, chemical feed pumps, and sludge pumps for maintenance needs
    • Monitor and record usage of treatment chemicals, such as polymer and micronutrients
    • Maintain and keep environmental chemicals, supplies and equipment in stock
    • Assist in collecting daily samples to insure the proper location and identify maintenance required at sample points
    • Review and perform analysis of operational test results for the wastewater treatment system and adjust flows, temperatures, etc. as required.
    • Assist in compiling data for submission of monthly discharge monitoring report for wastewater and stormwater
    • Perform lab analysis and/or collect samples third-party laboratories to assess Anamet health
    • Perform daily inspection of discharge to the river (Outfall 005)
    • Collect and download Outfall 005 temperature log on a weekly basis
    • Perform daily visual inspection of ponds for discoloration, odor, unusual foam, breaches, structural weakness, etc. Document any findings and assist with corrective actions as appropriate.
    • Walkthrough process area to check samplers, wastewater sump, and inspect for any unusual potential for wastewater loads
    • Review ammonia loading test results for the cooling tower and document the water flow over the tower as required by the air use permit.
    • Collect and ship sample(s) for toxicity test as needed
    • Record and track the quantity of residual materials being removed during pond cleanout activities
    • Support maintenance functions, project planning and related duties as assigned
    • On-Call for emergencies 24/7, primarily during the beet processing campaign; but potentially at any time throughout the year
    • Maintain EGLE required WWT Operator Certifications
  • Hazardous Waste
    • Inspect hazardous waste accumulation areas for used oil, parts washers, antifreeze, and lab waste for proper storage, labeling and disposal on a weekly basis.
    • Obtain RCRA training and certification to assist with the disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Stormwater
    • Inspect and document observations of storm water outfalls per NPDES requirements.
    • Collect samples for analysis per NPDES requirements.
    • Assist in performing quarterly storm water inspection and document as required by the SWPPP.
    • Inspect the site on a weekly basis to check and minimize potential for storm water contamination
    • Bring attention to appropriate personnel when any items are found.
    • Maintain EGLE Industrial Storm Water Operator Certification
  • Air Quality
    • Check pulp dryer scrubber water flow, and pressure drop on multi clone to insure compliance with permit on a weekly basis
    • Assist in determining if dust control measures are required to be implemented on a daily basis.
    • Check baghouses on sugar cooler and document the proper operation/maintenance.
    • Document any noted odors from the site (odor survey), and determine if odor-neutralizing operations are necessary.
    • Perform daily smoke emission monitoring
    • Maintain Method 9 Visible Emission Certification
  • Environmental Lab Bench
    • Review analytical laboratory procedures as appropriate per industry standards
    • Verify laboratory QA/QC procedures are being performed in accordance with the Environmental Laboratory Quality Assurance/Quality Control Assurance Manual
    • Supervisory role to environmental lab bench technicians
    • Assist with regulatory audits
Position Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, other technical degree or other relevant experience.
  • Industrial experience of 2+ years with progressive supervisory or management responsibilities.
  • Training or relevant exposure in supervision skills, quality assurance systems, environmental and safety regulations.
  • Strong leadership abilities, communication skills and understanding of mechanical equipment and chemical process.
  • Ability to clearly communicate strategy and vision to team members.
  • Proficient skills in company data management systems and Microsoft Office.
