JOB DESCRIPTION

The Environmental Specialist is responsible for supporting the development and sustainability of CAIRE’s Global Environmental Health and Safety Management System (GEHSMS) with the guidance from CAIRE’s EHS & Training Manager. The job focus for this position will be primarily on setting up a Carbon Foot Print measurement system and program to reduce CAIRE’s global Carbon Foot Print. The role will also be responsible for environmental compliance, monitoring and reporting at each site globally at CAIRE. CAIRE’s EHS program is supported by this position which includes but not limited to Hazard Communication, Hazardous Materials Storage & Handling, Stormwater Management, Atmospheric Emissions monitoring and reporting that are in compliance with the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) which includes Title V (1st year with Title V permit requirements), Spill Prevention & Response, Emergency Planning & Community Right-to-Know which includes Form R, Tier II, and Emergency Planning/ Spill Reporting, Hazardous Waste Management, Stormwater Management, Solid Waste Management, Asbestos, and Water Supply.

Essential Functions

  • With the support the EHS & Training Manager develop and sustain an environmental measurement system and a data collection process that captures key performance indicators (KPIs) recorded from CAIRE’s environmental monitoring problem, such as but not limited to:
  • CAIRE’s E2E Carbon Foot Print
  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions and other Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs)
  • Stormwater Management
  • Hazardous Waste Management
  • Solid Waste Management
  • Lead continuous improvement projects across multiple sites and/or departments to help reduce CAIRE’s carbon footprint, such as but not limited to:
  • Streamlining Global Logistics
  • Reducing Production Wastes
  • Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources
  • Weatherizing Buildings at different CAIRE Locations
  • Provide support in the communication of environmental policies and standards to assure effectiveness of environmental programs; define minimum standards of program quality; promote consistency among departments; and facilitate compliance with regulations and accepted standards of practice.
  • Develop/deliver systems for environmental training to employees.
  • Remain up to date on current and proposed environmental and chemical safety related standards, and social concerns which may affect CAIRE or its employees; provide user-friendly and timely interpretations to key stakeholders in management.
  • Assists outside technical services such as environmental monitoring, environmental consulting suppliers and vendors.
  • Anticipate and identify current and potential chemical and environmental hazards and practices that could affect employee safety and health and/or the public.
  • Support the process and database for tracking all SDS’s throughout each facility.
  • Serve as technical advisor and oversee performance against the facility’s annual environmental compliance by participating in the planning, development, and implementation of internal auditing and training systems related to applicable environmental and chemical hazard program elements. These include Hazard Communication, Chemical/Physical exposure monitoring, hazardous materials management, and Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-know Act (EPCRA) reporting.
  • Provide support to ensure that all environmental permits and reports are submitted to the appropriate governmental agency on a timely basis.
  • Assists the EHS & Training Manager with implementing CAIRE’s Global Environmental Health and Safety Management System (GEHSMS), capturing key performance indicators, and other projects and administrative responsibilities, as requested, to improve the quality of programs and services, enhancing teamwork among staff and colleagues, and assure a productive and efficient department.
  • Provide support to address deviations/ violations as identified during self-assessments and regulatory visits.

Competencies

  • 3-5 years’ experience in the following:
  • Leading continuous improvement projects resulting in the reduction of greenhouse emissions.
  • With carbon credit management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with cross-functional teammates and sites, Auditors, government agencies, 3rd party technical services, suppliers and vendors.
  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound data and business acumen.
  • Industry knowledge in certified and regulated quality management systems such as ISO13485, ISO9001, ISO14001, MDSAP, cGMP, NESHAP or EPCRA
  • Technical ability in trouble shooting, root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Data analytics expertise

Supervisory Responsibility

This position is an individual contributor role.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment and manufacturing/distribution environment.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, twisting and occasional crawling.
  • Occasional lifting, up to 50 lbs., occasional heavier lifting.
  • Occasional pushing, pulling, and handling of materials.

Travel

This position requires up to 25% travel. Some of the travel is international.

Education and Experience

Minimum B.S. degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related field aligned in Science or another engineering discipline

  • Preferred - Professional certification in Environmental Management (REM or CHMM) or ability to obtain such certification.
  • Strong knowledge of Environmental regulatory requirements, concepts, and best practices
  • Good understanding of the Environmental issues, regulations, and technology that impacts the medical device industry.
