Energy Controls Mechanic (BAS/BMS)

The department of Central Energy Plant has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Energy Controls Mechanic to work on the UHealth campus. The Energy Controls Mechanic implements ways to fully utilize and improve existing systems to ensure the most efficient energy utilization. Additionally, the Energy Controls Mechanic completes work requests for preventative and predictive maintenance, inspections, testing, repairs, and installation of equipment.

  • Responds to alarms reported by campus automation systems to mitigate potential losses of research specimens and costly pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Annually calibrate 350+ (and increasing) devices and obtain Certification for all sensors to maintain compliance as required by agencies having jurisdiction.
  • Inspects building control/monitoring systems and performs general maintenance work for systems.
  • Installs low voltage wiring and preforms wire terminations on controller replacements and retrofits.
  • Use energy surveying equipment (light meters, power factor meters, wattmeter, and anemometers).
  • Conducts HVAC, lighting, domestic hot water, natural gas and electrical consumption audits.
  • Inspects and Controls heating, cooling systems, pumps and other related equipment.
  • Inspects and Replaces (if needed) belts, filters and pulleys. Records the equipment conditions and reports anomalies to supervisor.
  • Tests and evaluates equipment performance using instruments such as voltmeters, ohmmeters, pyrometers, and pressure gauges.
  • Keeps daily logs on major components up-to-date.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and files on equipment and preventative maintenance.
  • Receives requests for corrective repair work related to building control and monitoring system and investigates/corrects any issues necessary.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on campus control systems and compliance monitoring systems. Replacing UPS batteries, calibrating device sensors, updating device firmware, and replacing faulty sensors and actuators.
  • Provides remote or on-site supports fire alarm test and smoke evacuations tests in conjunction with security and other Physical Plant staff.
  • Generates graphic floor plans, system schematics, live trend data, historical information, comprehensive reports, and summaries as needed.
  • Maintains work areas and equipment rooms in a clean and safe condition at all times.
  • Reports equipment, space and building deficiencies to supervisor and Department leadership in a timely manner.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment such as handsaws, electric drills, etc.
  • Maintains all tools and equipment in good operational condition.

Core Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Certification in relevant specialty or field
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
