The Department of History within the College of Arts and Sciences, seeks an Editorial Associate to join our team with a passion of bringing the knowledge and insight of history to a wide audience. The Editorial Associate oversees several of the essential daily operations of the magazine. The successful candidate will oversee production and editorial process of feature articles and milestone essays. These duties include: working with the editorial team to determine topics and stories for the article line-up, we are usually planning 3-6 months in advance. Researching and contacting potential authors to invite them to write for Origins. Onboarding authors: communicating our style guide and editorial requirements; connecting the author with our fiscal associates to complete all the essential forms for payment. Serve as the primary point of contact for authors in the event of questions or authors failing to complete work on time. Assist in editing essays once the article arrives. The Editorial Associate will do the first edit of the essay and then pass on to the three other editors. The Editorial Associate will ensure that the author supplies a bio and photo and will assist in posting the article on the website and to ensure that the author is paid upon completion of the essay. Throughout this process, the Editorial Associate will oversee the shared editorial google documents to help all team members to keep track of where things stand in the process.

The Editorial Associate will produce two to three videos each month and develop teacher resources and lesson plans. They will also organize Origins presence at national teacher conferences. The Editorial Associate will work with fiscal staff to process payments and expenses, coordinate meetings with Origins staff and the staff of our sister publication Picturing Black History, and other tasks as they arise.

The Editorial Associate needs to be a self-starter and able to work successfully with minimal supervision once trained. This position requires meeting strict deadlines. The successful candidate must be detail oriented to keep track of information.

Minimum Education Required

Bachelor's Level Degree with a major in History or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in public history, editing/writing, and working with websites. Podcasting, video production, and/or marketing experience is helpful but not essential.

Additional Information

The pay range for this job profile is $20.02 - $26.33. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
