Economic Development Director
Reports to: Vice President of Economic Development (currently BBA CEO)
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Economic Development Director serves as a regional advisor, industry specialist, advocate and convener for the industry(ies) represented by the companies within their portfolio. The goal is to help these companies operate competitively in the Birmingham region. Companies representing the most opportunity for job growth and the highest retention risk are prioritized for inclusion within the portfolio. The Economic Development Director also serves as lead project manager on assigned existing industry projects for the Birmingham Business Alliance. They are responsible for the overall administration and supervision of these projects.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and manage existing industry relationships within the assigned portfolio operating within Jefferson County and supporting regional economic development allies in the surrounding counties in the Birmingham region
- Effectively manage multiple existing company projects without missing deadlines
- Develop strong relationships with local site decision influencers operating within the portfolio industry(ies), including utility companies, state and local economic development allies, construction and engineering firms, law firms, commercial real estate companies, etc. to generate leads and effectively manage projects
- Serve as an industry specialist for companies operating within the region by attending industry-specific trade shows and conferences, generating data from portfolio companies and distilling insights, reading leading industry publications, creating a business case for the industry in Birmingham and supporting the BBA’s business attraction and marketing efforts as an advisor
- Convene executives within the portfolio to network, identify collective issues and opportunities, and/or share best practices
- As directed by the economic development division lead, participate in events and programs related to the BBA’S business retention and expansion efforts
- Assist the economic development division lead with goal setting and strategic planning related to the BBA’s business retention and expansion efforts
- Demonstrate value to clients and use existing relationships to support the investor relations team with prospecting and onboarding new investors
- Accurately complete monthly expense, mileage and timekeeping reports and submit them on time
- Accurately complete CRM entries related to projects, companies, consultations, assists, etc. and submit them on time
- Operate within the role and department budget
- Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of three years of professional experience; ideal candidate would have 3-6 years of experience in economic development
- Shared commitment to our organization’s mission of serving businesses across the Greater Birmingham Region
- Effective project manager and highly deadline-driven
- Highly motivated self-starter and multi-tasker
- Excellent leadership and organizing skills
- Adaptable and open to quick pivots to accomplish goals
JOB TYPE
This is a full-time salaried position, compensation commensurate with experience, with competitive benefits. Office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with expected availability to work mornings, evenings and weekends based on special events. This role is based in Birmingham, Ala., and is not eligible for remote work.
