Position Summary

The Division Safety Director is responsible for developing, deploying, and overseeing the safety programs and initiatives within the division, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, promoting a culture of safety across all construction sites, and to prevent accidents and eliminate or control exposures that could result in financial loss to the Company. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining safety policies and procedures, conducting training sessions, and leading incident investigations that will ultimately lead to controls that will prevent future occurrences. The Division Safety Director works closely with corporate and division management, project managers, site supervisors, and workers to ensure a safe working environment for all employees.

Division Safety Director Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safety Program Development and Implementation
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and maintain cost-effective programs, policies and procedures to prevent accidents, eliminate or control exposures, and comply with customer-specific policies and procedures as well as the rules and regulations of local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and other applicable safety standards.
  • Regularly review and update safety protocols to reflect current best practices and regulatory changes.
  • Training and Education
  • Develop training materials and resources to educate employees on safety practices and procedures.
  • Develop and provide training and education programs to executive management, middle management, and field locations to improve safety performance of the Division.
  • Ensure new employees receive proper safety orientation.
  • Site Inspections and Audits
  • Inspect facilities and job sites to identify existing or potential safety, health, and environmental hazards. Recommend and ensure corrective actions or preventative measures are implemented to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, audits, and corrective actions.
  • Develop and present periodic safety reports to division / corporate leadership.
  • Incident Investigation and Reporting
  • Responsible for the thorough investigation, documentation and reporting of all job-related accidents, incidents, and near-misses.
  • Prepare studies and analysis of accidents and hazards for use by company personnel and outside agencies. Prepare detailed reports on findings and recommend measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop and analyze statistical data relating to the safety program and distribute it to Management.
  • Track and analyze leading and lagging indicators to identify trends and develop control measures for improvement.
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Stay current with applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations and standards.
  • Ensure all safety documentation is up-to-date and compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies as necessary.
  • Safety Culture Promotion
  • Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability throughout the division.
  • Encourage proactive safety behaviors and recognize employees who demonstrate exemplary safety practices.
  • Foster open communication about safety concerns and suggestions.
  • Emergency Response
  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Coordinate and conduct emergency drills and exercises.
  • Act as a point of contact for emergency situations and manage the division's response efforts.
  • Collaboration and Leadership
  • Work closely with project managers, site supervisors, and other stakeholders to integrate safety into project planning and execution.
  • Represent the division in safety meetings and committees.

Division Safety Director Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CSP, CHST, OSHA 500) are highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in construction safety management, including familiarity and experience with heavy equipment operation, to include earth-moving equipment, irrigation, and pressurized pipe.
  • Must have previous supervisory experience.
  • Must have extensive experience in incident & injury case management, along with the ability to create relationships positive working relationships with medical facilities near project sites.
  • Prefer Spanish / English speaking, but not a requirement.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with good driving record required.
  • Must have Advanced First Aid and CPR Certification (or willing and able to obtain certification upon being hired into the position).
  • Due to the nature of this position, there will be a high degree of travel to the different job sites. As such, the preferred hiring location will be for the Houston office location, but we will consider applicants from locations in cities with major airport hubs to support ease and cost of travel, who would work remote.

Division Safety Director Physical Demands:

  • Considerable amounts of travel by air and by vehicle with some weekend work and overtime.
  • Requires excessive outdoor walking, including across rough terrain or otherwise uneven work surfaces to evaluate safety compliance.
  • Must be able to tolerate temperature fluctuations, and a dusty/noisy work environment. Ability to lift, push, pull and carry 25 pounds occasionally.
  • All the physical demands listed are essential functions.

This role is classified as safety sensitive. Candidates must show the capacity to proactively initiate, effectively lead, and consistently uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards. Compliance with this requirement is a fundamental condition for employment.
