Overview

Job Description

The essential function of this job is to provide coordination and leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of all safety and security measures for Hamilton County Schools. The position is responsible for directing assigned programs and services, leading the District team of School Safety Officers, and ensuring District compliance with all applicable state and federal laws related to school safety. Will work closely with district and school administrators, and local law enforcement agencies on all matters related to school safety and security.

This position is pending board approval.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates a comprehensive security/school safety program.
  • Supervises and evaluates all HCS School Security Officers
  • Serves as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies.
  • Provides training and assistance to site-based administrators in matters of safety and security.
  • Advises and assists site-based administrators in matters involving criminal activities on school campuses.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of a district level Crisis Response Plan.
  • Assists/advises in the development of crisis management/emergency response plans as part of each school’s safety plan.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of security plans for special events involving the school facilities.
  • Directs/coordinates the periodic assessment/audit of school facilities and grounds to determine safety and security issues.
  • Coordinates with site-based administrators, Maintenance and Facilities Sections to address and correct safety/security issues on school campuses.
  • Prepares memos, reports, drawings, etc. related to safety and traffic issues on school campuses and forwards those to Maintenance, Facilities or other appropriate locations.
  • Receives all reports of school crime from site-based administrators and maintains statistics regarding this information.
  • Supports and manages the student threat assessment process.
  • Directs the District’s effort to collect and compile any required annual reporting to the Tennessee Department of Education
  • Provides periodic reports to the Superintendent and the School Board on matters pertaining to school safety.
  • Communicates with the media on matters involving school safety.
  • Communicates with other school systems on matters related to school safety.
  • Performs basic personnel administration duties, including hiring, orienting new staff, assigning work, scheduling, disciplining, evaluating, and granting leave; prepares program budget and related reports; monitors expenditures.
  • Coordinates all required training and professional development for School Safety Officers
  • Implements training programs pertaining to matters of safety and security for site-based administrators and bus supervisors.
  • Works directly with local law enforcement agencies during critical incident situations and follow-up.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of assigned programs and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Effectively present information to management, public groups, and/or boards.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records and develop meaningful reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to perform various work activities.
  • Attends work as scheduled and arrives to work on time.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Complies with applicable district, state, and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures, including but not limited to areas in security/school safety programs.
  • Adheres to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law and Code of Professional Conduct as defined by Board Policy 5.6011.
  • Use computers and other technology to enter and access information related to essential job functions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Attends meetings and training as required.

Knowledge/Education/Experience

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field
  • At least eight (8) years of law enforcement or related experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Three (3) years supervisory experience required.
  • Experience as a School Resource Officer preferred.

Skills/Qualifications

  • Ability to qualify for appropriate licensure or TN POST certification.
  • Weapons qualifications at or above established standards.
  • Certified in First Aid, CPR, and “Stop the Bleed”
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with all stakeholders.
  • Ability to make sound professional judgements.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet Browsers, and Google platforms.
  • Knowledge of the current literature, trends, methods and developments in the areas
  • of security and school safety.
  • knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration.

Compensation

Salary is based on a combination of relevant education and experience.
