Director of Safety

The Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing all safety programs across the company's diverse business operations, which include convenience stores, construction sites, and hotels. The role involves ensuring compliance with all safety regulations, minimizing risk, promoting a culture of safety throughout the organization, and overseeing the company’s environmental management practices to ensure sustainability and compliance. This position reports to the company’s President.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety Program Development and Management:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety policies and procedures tailored to each business unit (convenience stores, construction, and hotels).
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards.
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of safety training programs for employees at all levels.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
  • Stay updated with federal, state, and local safety regulations and ensure the company’s compliance.
  • Prepare and submit required reports and documentation to regulatory bodies.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies during inspections and ensure corrective actions are taken as needed.
  • Risk Management:
  • Identify and assess risks across all business operations and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
  • Lead incident investigations to determine root causes and implement corrective and preventive measures.
  • Maintain records of safety-related incidents and analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Training and Development:
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs and workshops for employees and management.
  • Ensure all employees are trained in emergency procedures, hazard recognition, and proper safety practices.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement in safety practices through ongoing education and communication.
  • Emergency Response and Crisis Management:
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans for all business units.
  • Coordinate and lead emergency drills and training sessions.
  • Act as the primary point of contact during safety emergencies and coordinate with emergency services as necessary.
  • Environmental Management:
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of environmental policies and practices to ensure sustainability and regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments and ensure the company adheres to all environmental regulations.
  • Promote environmental awareness and practices throughout the organization.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with department heads and managers to integrate safety into all aspects of operations.
  • Communicate safety policies and updates effectively across the organization.
  • Serve as a safety resource and advisor to all levels of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a safety management role, preferably in a multi-site organization.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST), or similar.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing safety programs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel to various company locations as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in the Convenience Store Industry:

  • Understanding of the unique safety challenges in a retail environment, including slip and fall prevention, robbery response, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Experience in the Construction Industry:
  • Knowledge of construction safety standards, such as those related to fall protection, equipment operation, and site-specific hazards.
  • Experience in the Hotel Industry:
  • Familiarity with safety protocols in hospitality settings, including guest safety, fire safety, and managing health emergencies.

Work Environment

The Safety Director will primarily work in an office setting but will frequently visit various company locations including convenience stores, construction sites, and hotels. This role requires the ability to travel and the flexibility to respond to safety incidents as they arise.
