Position Overview:

As our Director of Safety, you will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of safety initiatives across the organization. This role encompasses a significant scope of responsibility and leadership, including the ability to establish an effective behavioral based safety and compliance program for DOT safety and compliance regulations, warehouse and retail operations. You will ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, demonstrating a strong understanding of EHS standards and DOT requirements. This position requires the ability to create a culture of safety within the organization, coupled with strategic program development capabilities.


Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute comprehensive EHS strategies and initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
  • DOT Safety and Compliance: Build and develop a robust safety and compliance program focused on DOT regulations and shaping the correct behaviors. Ensure thorough understanding and implementation of DOT safety standards and program development.
  • Safety Culture: Promote and sustain a strong safety culture by fostering awareness, conducting regular training, and encouraging active employee participation in safety initiatives.
  • Risk Management: Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement measures to mitigate risks. Develop and update risk management plans as needed.
  • Emergency Response: Partner with facilities to enhance emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures and first aid protocols.
  • Incident Investigation: Establish effective protocols and processes into workplace accidents, injuries, or near misses. Analyze root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
  • Training Programs: Develop and deliver EHS and DOT-specific training programs for leaders and associates, ensuring they are a committee about safety protocols, procedures, and proper use of equipment.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Collaborate on the preparation and submission of required environmental and safety reports to regulatory agencies such as OSHA and DOT.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with Operations, Human Resources, Facilities, and other departments to ensure a holistic approach to EHS management.
  • Process Improvement: Provide guidance and recommendations for process changes or facility modifications to enhance safety and compliance.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of EHS activities, including training records, incident reports, audit findings, and DOT compliance documentation.
  • Metrics Management: Manage and report on established metrics, while developing new metrics that add value to operations.
  • Authority Liaison: Serve as the primary liaison with all authority agencies required for DOT compliance, including but not limited to the FMCSA, state DOT offices, and local enforcement agencies.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.


Environment:

  • Warehouse Grocery: Approximately 50°F – 90°F
  • Warehouse Perishable: Approximately 26°F - 60°F
  • Warehouse Freezer: Approximately 0°F - -20°F


Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday
  • Start time TBD
  • Weekend and Night availability as needed by the business


Experience:

  • Safety Culture: Proven capability in defining, designing and delivering successful behavioral based safety programs
  • Required: Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in EHS management or a related field, with at least five (5) years in a supervisory role.
  • Strongly Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field.
  • Preferred: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM)Certified Director of Safety (CDS), Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) and DOT Compliance Specialist Certification.
  • Required: Extensive experience with EHS and DOT safety audits, hazardous materials transport, training programs, and accident investigation.
  • Required: Proficient using Microsoft Office Suite
