Director of Process Engineering

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and based at our global headquarters in Houston, TX, the Director Process Engineering manages and drives development, optimization, and scale-up of manufacturing processes. This will require a strong leader that is highly skilled in people, process and technology. This position collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure efficient and high-quality production, driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance yield and reduce costs. With a focus on innovation and quality control, the Director Process Engineering will establish and maintain robust systems while providing technical expertise to resolve complex manufacturing issues. This role offers the opportunity to lead in a dynamic startup environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning & Team Leadership:
  • Creates, evangelizes, and implements strategic plans for the process engineering team aligned with the company's goals and objectives. This involves setting clear direction, priorities, and measurable goals for the department or team.
  • Leads and motivates team members towards achieving their objectives. This includes hiring, training, and mentoring staff, as well as fostering a positive and inclusive work culture.
  • Assists the CTO to drive key initiatives in the organization.
  • Process Engineering & Innovation:
    • Leads the process engineering team to develop and optimize manufacturing processes for HTS wire production, with a focus on scalability, efficiency, and quality. Uses statistically designed experiments to efficiently optimize processes.
    • Collaborates closely with R&D, engineering, and production teams to transfer new technologies from development to production, ensuring seamless integration and efficient scale-up.
    • Monitors key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to assess the department's performance and progress towards goals. This involves analyzing data, identifying trends, and preparing regular reports for senior management or stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Develops and implements process monitoring and control strategies to maximize production uptime and minimize downtime.
    • Provides technical expertise and guidance to resolve complex manufacturing issues and drive root cause analysis and corrective actions.
    • Drives continuous improvement initiatives to enhance production yield, reduce costs, and optimize resource utilization.
  • Budget Management:
    • Manages departmental budgets and resources efficiently, ensuring cost-effectiveness and adherence to financial targets. This includes budgeting, monitoring expenses, and making strategic decisions to optimize resource allocation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, materials science, or a related field.
  • 10 years of experience in process development including prior role(s) managing teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D.) in related field.
  • Prior experience in the semiconductor, materials, and/or energy industries.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Deep technical expertise in process development, optimization, and scale-up, with a strong understanding of materials science, and manufacturing technologies. Expert with DOE and data analysis.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, with a systematic and data-driven approach to process improvement and troubleshooting.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively lead and motivate cross-functional teams.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems, statistical process control, and regulatory requirements for manufacturing operations.
  • Proven track record of driving innovation, implementing new technologies, and delivering results in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Proficiency in office software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
