Director of Operations (Remote)

A company is seeking a Director of Operations in the Washington, D.C. Metro region. This is a new, exempt position within the organization that will maximize its effectiveness by overseeing the day-to-day operations of a U.S and international remote team. The ideal candidate has a strong background in operational systems evaluation, human resources; is enthusiastic, self-motivated, a problem solver and committed to equality, justice, human rights, and Indigenous Peoples. The Director of Operations will ensure that the company’s Board of Directors, team members, consultants, advisors, interns, volunteers and the community the company serves have the tools and support they need to succeed. This senior position reports directly to the Executive Director. Responsibilities include leading and overseeing human resources policies implementation and activities; administering payroll and benefits, and financial management.

As a member of a small team, the Director will be involved in additional activities, events and projects as the needs arise.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Organizational Management


  • Conduct analysis of current operational infrastructure and develop a comprehensive system for organizational day to day management.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the organization, including support of a binational team of contractors and volunteers.
  • Development of an operational handbook inclusive of administrative policies and procedures.
  • Support Executive Director in management of an international Board Of Directors.
  • Support staff in managing program operations.
  • Making recommendations on continuous improvement of operational processes.
  • Overseeing logistics for all company’s events, virtual and in person: interpretation coordination, vendor management, travel coordination processes; developing and monitoring budgets.
  • Support with the strategic plan implementation.
  • Support staff and board with IT needs.


Human Resources


  • Oversee human resources functions, including employee relations, benefits, training, recruitment, onboarding and dismissal.
  • HR policy development, maintenance, and implementation.
  • Managing contractors, vendors, and associated contracts and agreements.
  • Volunteer program development and management.
  • Coordinate professional development opportunities for the team, volunteers and Community leaders.
  • Bi-weekly payroll processing and management of all payroll tax accounts.


Finances


  • Supervise financial management, including liaising with the company’s bookkeeping and accounting firms.
  • Managing organizational audit process from identification of auditing firm to presenting report to the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare annual operating budget and support program staff with project and/or program budgets in alignment with the strategic plan.
  • Prepare grant, program or project specific financial reports.


Supervisory Responsibilities

The Director of Operations will be responsible for supervising the Administration Coordinator, as the company’s team grows supervisor responsibilities could increase.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities)


  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, Human Resources, and/or Finance.
  • 8-10 years experience in non-profit management or related management roles.
  • Multilingual, minimum Spanish and English fluency; proficiency in a Maya or an Indigenous language is a plus but not required.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace knowledge and skills.
  • Excellent QuickBooks or other accounting software skills.
  • Expert in Gusto or other payroll and human resources service platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Detail oriented, highly organized and efficient.
  • Must be able to prioritize multiple projects, meet deadlines, be responsive, and complete work functions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Track record of resourcefulness, developing comprehensive solutions to operational problems, being able to quickly adapt to changing priorities and taking initiative on projects.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with excellent planning, organizational and follow-up skills.
  • Sound judgment, critical thinking skills.
  • Experience or familiarity with Indigenous Peoples’ rights, including those of indigenous women, as well as human rights, environmental protection, environmental justice, climate justice, and social justice, is highly valued.
  • Experience or familiarity working in international settings is preferred but not required.
