The birth of a baby brings with it a natural wonder many parents aren’t aware of – the ability to save a life. A newborn’s umbilical cord and placenta contain blood-forming cells that can provide lifesaving treatments for patients with metabolic or immune system disorders, leukemia and lymphoma. Cord blood is often discarded as medical waste, but that is changing as understanding has grown. July has been designated as Cord Blood Awareness Month by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. The project was part of Summer of Service 🌼, an annual initiative led by our philanthropic arm UnifiedCares.
