Director of Business Development


Location-based

While this is a remote role with a USA scope, the ideal candidate should be open to traveling to client locations as required.


Your role

The Director of Business Development in Chemexpress is accountable for promoting RSM, intermediates, API synthesis, DS/DP manufacturing, and drug discovery services to enable the company to meet its near-term and long-range revenue and profitability targets. This position leverages their technical expertise and business insight to ensure effective and uniform communication, as well as to fulfill customer expectations, contentment, and deadlines.


  1. Meet with potential and existing customers in the assigned territory to qualify leads, showcase capabilities and services, recognize opportunities, build connections, and finalize deals.
  2. Negotiate Confidentiality Agreements (CDAs), Quotes/Proposals, and Technology Agreements collaborating with internal legal teams.
  3. Manage the sales process, including discussions about projects, presentations, preparing requests for proposals (RFPs), generating quotes, and closing deals to generate revenue.
  4. Follow up on quotes/proposals to ensure customer understanding and satisfaction, and addressing questions related to scope, costs, delivery, and service quality.
  5. Engage in proactive communication regarding project status or any issues that might impact timely service delivery, collaborating with Project Management, Operations, and Quality.
  6. Attend trade shows, industry events, seminars, and networking sessions to represent the company professionally.
  7. Safeguard the confidentiality of company and client information.
  8. Record and report sales activities and updating management on overall progress, including Leads, CDAs, Calls, Visits, Audits, Conferences, and Opportunities.
  9. Perform other assigned duties.


Required Skills

  1. Minimum BS (MS or PhD preferable) in a pharmaceutical discipline (chemistry, biology, physics, etc.)
  2. Prior experience in technical operations (R&D, manufacturing, laboratory testing) in a pharmaceutical or CDMO environment.
  3. Knowledge of pharmaceutical industry and terminology.
  4. A willingness and ability to travel to client locations as needed.
  5. Must be able to multitask while maintaining efficiency and effectiveness.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate with clients, peers, management, and other external contacts.
  7. Comfortable, willing, and able to have difficult conversations with clients about timelines, budgets, and unexpected results.
  8. Must have the ability to work effectively and independently in a remote environment.
  9. Working knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft Office Products, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.


Preferred qualifications

  1. MS or PhD in a pharmaceutical discipline (chemistry, biology, physics, etc.) Successful business-to-business sales experience within the pharmaceutical industry
  2. Functional knowledge in cGMP production of pharmaceuticals
  3. Ability to conceptualize problems and solutions and sort out the business strategy.
  4. Strong organizational, planning, project management skills, ability to maintain demanding timelines.
