Responsibilities

This position assists with the planning, supervision, and technical aspects of the programs for the Public Works Department. The department includes street maintenance, storm sewers, city shop, building department/engineering, solid waste collection, wastewater treatment and collection system, and water treatment and distribution system.


This position performs complex and routine engineering duties related to the projects and programs of the department. Supervises job sites in absence of general foreman; maybe exposed to extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions. May work in confined spaces. Hazards include working with loud noises, chemicals and equipment.  


The position requires ability to: communicate orally and in writing; calculate; read and understand complex laws, regulations, and contracts; maintain records and files; operate a computer; and operate computer aided design software. Must be physically able to: perform inspections; lift up to 75 pounds; climb ladders; drive a vehicle; walk on uneven ground; operate reproduction, drafting, and survey equipment; operate pipe locators including chlorine and hazardous gas detectors and safety equipment; and operate office machines.


Qualifications

Skills to fulfill this position include operating office machines such as calculators, computer-aided drafting software, drafting equipment, survey equipment, pipe locators, chlorine and hazardous gas detectors, and safety equipment. Skills in communication and writing with competency with Microsoft software.  


This position requires a knowledge of modern principles and practices of public works administration; knowledge of modern civil engineering principles and practices; knowledge of accounting; knowledge of current applicable local, state, and federal codes; knowledge of water distribution.


The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to Bachelors of Civil Engineering or Construction Engineering Technology degrees, experience in construction inspection and/or public works related fields.
